They couldn't wait for the new Metrograft curbing? Or DSIC tree grates? Sorry those have been way laid. In the immortal words of Mayor Stratton "perfect for another pocket park". Or Gillen's Gulch-part deux. The free fall continues while a few connected DEMS pick at the bones.
Looks like the Gazetto added a story at 2:14 today online. Does anyone with access to their stupid paid site care to post it here? I'm dying to read it. Thanks
After more than a century in business, Olender Mattress Co. to close Friday, May 20, 2011 By Michael Lamendola (Contact) Gazette Reporter
SCHENECTADY — Olender Mattress Co. is closing after 33 years of business on lower State Street and 109 years in the Capital Region, with the owner citing economic factors as the reason.
Richard Olender, the fourth-generation owner and operator of the specialty mattress store, said the recession has hurt the home furnishing business to the point where people are more interested in “putting food on their tables and gas in their cars,” rather than spending money on a high-end mattress...............................>>>>..............................>>>>..............................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2011/may/20/0520_mattress/
you guys must be really happy, bad news, yeah!!!!!!
.... You are like vultures. lol... Fly around the corpse a bit and pick at it some....
Uh, would you care to state what GOOD news is in the city? Well??????
And in case you choose to say that some business is opening, make sure you include the facts (from official records) that show how much the taxpyaers will be forced to fork over.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

And in your mind, the proper thing to do is to keep everything a secret. Don't tell taxpayers what there money is used for, right? Don't let taxpayers know that their property taxes are increased so the millionaires and billionaires don't have to pay, right? Make sure you keep it secret that Philip Morris is living like a royal on the taxpayer dime, right? Make sure no residents know that children are getting killed right? If someone sees there own street has pot holes, just make sure thery dont know that it's the same all over the city, right? And make sure the homeowners don't know that their money is going to billionaires instead of fixing roads, right?

Great news for Rotterdam and all of Schenectady County .... WORKING TOGETHER WORKS
NOT
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
Thanks Admin for posting the article, but I can't access it. Grrrr, effing Gazette. I'm not paying to read that crappy rag. No wonder they suck. I'll try the TU.
SCHENECTADY It’s lights out for Olender Mattress company to close after 109 years in region BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter
Olender Mattress Co. is closing after 34 years of business on lower State Street and 109 years in the Capital Region, with the owner citing economic factors as the reason. Richard Olender, 62, the fourthgeneration owner and operator of the speciality store, said the recession has hurt his business to the point where people are more interested in “putting food on their tables and gas in their cars” than in spending money on a high-end mattress. “This was always our best store, and we have a good customer following. But the problem is that most people buy mattresses at the low end where there is a low profi t,” Olender said. “It is tough to run a business with low profi t.” Olender said he will try to sell his inventory at wholesale or below cost immediately and close the store shortly thereafter. He would not comment on plans for the building. At one time, Olender had three stores in the Capital Region. The Albany store, which he opened 18 years ago, closed two weeks ago, and the Clifton Park store, which he opened 17 years ago, closed two years ago. Olender said the downtown Schenectady location benefi ted from the increased traffi c brought by the revitalization to the area, but he said it wasn’t enough. “It is beyond that. We are dealing with city, county, state layoffs, federal layoffs. People are scared. We are dealing with hyperinfl ation — everything is going up, from food to gasoline. There is hardly any discretionary money left to buy a mattress,” he said. Olender said he plans to take it easy after he closes the store and perhaps find employment where he “does not have to work 100 hours a week.” He has an extensive family network in the area. At one point, Olender employed 20 people at three stores. The State Street location has six people. Charles Steiner, president of the Chamber of Schenectady County, said he is sad to see the loss of a prominent business in the community. He also said the loss may be short-lived because of the pending redevelopment of Erie Boulevard and proposed redevelopment of lower State Street toward Schenectady County Community College. “Clearly, the economics have been challenging over the last few years, and clearly, it was not a spur-of-the-moment decision. It was an analysis of the marketplace and of the ever-growing competition,” Steiner said. He said the mattress market is highly competitive. Steiner added that the cost of doing business in New York may have played a factor in Olender’s closure. “The overall business climate, taxes and regulations, are difficult. But it is not just government. There are ever-increasing health care costs for employees,” he said. Olender’s specialization in one product — mattresses — may have hurt the business as well, Steiner said. “There was no other diversity to their product line. While this has advantages from the point of view of buying power, it has the disadvantage of being focused on one product,” he said. James Salengo, executive director of the Downtown Schenectady Improvement Corporation, called the closure of Olender sad. “The economy has put a lot of stress on small businesses. Olender had a long history here, and we are sorry to see it go,” he said. Acting Mayor Gary McCarthy, a Democrat running for mayor in November against Alliance Party candidate Roger Hull, also lamented the loss of Olender. He said he bought his current mattress from Olender. Ray Gillen, chairman of the Metroplex Development Authority, said Olender had been a successful business he is sorry to see go. However, he added that the Olender building will likely get snatched up should it go up for sale. It sits next to a lot that once contained three large Robinson’s Furniture buildings. Metroplex tore them down when they began to collapse. “People who have looked at Robinson have expressed the desire to option [the Olender] property for a larger footprint,” Gillen said. Gillen said the Robinson site is too narrow for a development project, so the Olender site would help with that effort. He would not reveal the developers or the projects. Metroplex is currently conducting environmental studies on the Robinson property, a prelude to cleaning up the site. ........................>>>>..............................>>>>...................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00102&AppName=1
Olender currently pays well over $50K in taxes (school and City) every year. The Robinson Building next door pays no taxes.
According to the Death Ray this is a positive development! Now he can enlarged the Gillen's Gulch! According to him "there is interest in the project"? From who? This idiot has to go. Then the moron from the worst Chamber telling Olender how to do business. What business has he run? He said the problem is not local government. $50,000 in taxes is no big problem? McCarthy was the only one that made an intelligent comment.
When this kind of thing happens Death Ray and his people usually have something snide and snarkey to say like "We are not concerned because that company has been a huge detriment to us moving forward and reaching out to improve the 200 block." or "We finally will be able to have Metroplex control of a key parcel that will energize our redevelopment efforts along that corridor and bring much more foot traffic into downtown."
Now tell me, do I know them or WHAT? Watch what he says when something like this happens!
BINGO! More room for Gillen's Gulch! Another possible pocket park! Or the always popular parking for nonexistent business. But don't fret-the Death Ray/DEMS will be flushing $10 MILLION into that unused park by the disgusting bus station. That ought to spark "renaissance"-ROTFLMAO!!
