The most recent Metroplex-Rotterdam success story appears to be the Recovery Sports Bar and Berkshire Bank project. Why the landscape architects decided to finish off this beautification project with a “bolder theme” is beyond me. This long-awaited and much-needed improvement, begun by the great entrepreneur and sports enthusiast, BBL construction’s Donald Led Duke, before his untimely death, raises the question, “Why the rock finale?” If the “whatever” nod by the Rotterdam Planning and Zoning Commission meant that the green space requirement found in many communities could qualify with a green painted bank sign, a green metal roof and green indoor/outdoor carpeting on the deck, then oh, well, go with it. Let’s hope the bean counters and antimaintenance gurus’ latest money-saving philosophy does not catch on or perhaps we will all someday find ourselves under a pile of rocks. Here’s hoping the board of directors at Arlington National Cemetery and Memory Gardens don’t decide to save money on grass mowing and green space maintenance in the same fashion. Then, again, they do not come under the auspices of the Rotterdam building codes.
