Report: Doctors Refusing to Treat Overweight Patients
Tuesday, May 17, 2011
By Susan Jones

From the South Florida Sun-Sentinel: Fifteen obstetrics-gynecology practices out of 105 polled by the Sun Sentinel said they have set weight limits for new patients. Some of the doctors said the main reason was their exam tables or other equipment can't handle people over a certain weight, but at least six said heavy women run a higher risk of complications.

"People don't realize the risk we're taking by taking care of these patients," the newspaper quoted Dr. Albert Triana of South Miami as saying. "There's more risk of something going wrong and more risk of getting sued. Everything is more complicated with an obese patient in GYN surgeries and in [pregnancies]," he told the newspaper.

It is not illegal for doctors to refuse overweight patients, but it has medical ethicists worried. So far, the weight cutoffs have been enacted only by South Florida ob-gyns, who have long complained about high numbers of lawsuits after difficult births and high rates for medical-malpractice insurance.

If you choose a bad lifestyle expect consequences, I don't blame the doctors for looking after themselves especially if their money and reputation is on the line. Same with insurance, if you are a heavy smoker or drinker you can expect to pay more. Personal responsibility people.

I wonder if they realize how many people are TECHNICALLY "obese" and over a BMI scale

I have a Dr at Ellis Medical Arts - avid skier, runner, very active.  Doesn't look to have an ounce of fat - technically he's "obese" according to the BMI scale

Check out this article on the then-proposed changes.
http://edition.cnn.com/HEALTH/9806/03/weight.measure/index.html

Quoted Text
Under the proposed guidelines, which are to be announced later this month by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 25 million more Americans would be considered overweight -- including two baseball third-basemen: Chipper Jones of the Atlanta Braves and Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles.

Quoted Text
Using the old criteria, the average woman -- with a height of 5 feet, 4 inches (1.6 meters) and weighing 155 pounds (70 kilograms) -- was considered overweight.

Under the new definition, that weight drops to 145 pounds (66 kg). A person at the same height who weighs 175 pounds (79 kg) would be considered obese.

Look at that again. The average woman is overweight.

This proves once again that the BMI labels are meaningless. If everyone is "overweight", then no one is overweight.

This is also a consequence of Congress choosing not to deal with tort reform in the health-care law for political reasons.

Why would they? Most of them are attorneys

Isn't that considered segregating one part of society over another? Some more privileged than others?

As 'sombody' posted on another thread.......'are we not our brother's keepers'?????

Funny how opinions change when they are the ones being targeted!!!

stats and numbers are a game....BMI is no different than your cholesterol(based on TODAY'S research)....I'm all for the help/research needed...
but really,,,folks we need vit D from the sun and sunscreen prevents that....milk DOESN'T NATURALLY have vit D or other nutrients...it's used to
subsidise the industrialisation of our nation.....so if you are that lazy to atleast pay attention to your fat and lazy lifestyle then you shall reap what you
sow.....

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

we happen to be human beings that have cravings- food, sex, sweets, attention or whatever capable of making the wrong choices .  What infinite number of seemingly random choices and events in your life have led you to where you are now ? Have you really been fully conscious the whole time ? really ? every day ? every minute ?

Healthcare practitioner ? you will most probably die from the same thing everyone else does- even with all of your special knowledge-
