Yes Bumble  as MT pointed out- you dont need hospice to get pain medication- but MT trys to confuse people with his stupid exampleshe still doesnt know what hospice services do nor when they are used - but he still keeps talking -

Someone under hospice care most probably will not be able to dial a phone to call the cab to go to the doctor ( with or without family help ) to get the prescription-  orpick it up bla bla bla-

Is your family member able to get out of bed - no ?  who changes their diapers ? do you let them lay there 24/7 or get a hoyer lifft and get them up and down  a few times a day ?  do your family members dress bed sores ?

I agree with your post except this last sentence... IMO, most people understand exactly what Hospice does, and they appreciate their service... it's just a few who don't know, or refuse to know what they do.

I currently have TWO members of my family under hospice care, and 2 years ago had SIX through the year.  Currently, both TWO are 100% able to take care of themselves (daily hygeine, cooking, etc).  Of the previous SIX, I can only think of ONE who wasn't able to make decisions for themselves.  In fact, EVERYONE except that one, spent a LOT of time on the phone, reminiscing with friends, talking about old times, etc.   One of the two currently still surfs the internet, gets pictures from family and emails daily.  The reasons they're in hospice ranges from pancreatic cancer to just plan old age (heart problems).

"most" - only in your imagination.  There's a lot of reasons people come under hospice care, but all have one final goal, death.

Confused about what hospice does? You're quite the failure - you have NO clue.

Some people naturally talk out of both sides of their mouths- you are one of them.  Beginning with the Original Post and title to this thread creates confusion and you choose to add to it with whatever little stories you come up with _ like responding about the pain medication  such an ignorant-SNEAKY  way - weaving in with your stupid political philosophy+ death + some constipated conservative philosophy = death panel.  Why be so twoface ?

I work with hospice...side by side....and before hospice we gave the drugs just as much...we were the family counsel....we were at the bedside and
we did a damn good job....and we still do.....hospice in an institutional setting doesn't fit...at home maybe,,,,but, the family can pull up their
boot straps and face it head on without a government subsidised system.....hospice isn't any more schooled or educated about death than you or
I....we have let the language of 'experts' remove from us, our ability to deal and make choices and act....'experts' can make us victims by the
questioning of our own good works.....a family may not do the exact same thing with their dying loved one as the next but, THAT'S OK....there is
no manual and people are that different.....the hospice formula is the same for everyone.......

is there a place for hospice, sure.....but there is more a place for each of us to look it right in the eye and plow forward, feeling, learning, crying or
whatever we each need to do....hospice doesn't change the road....it's easy for us to hear and accept the slogan they sing because just like
any other advertiser(especially the drug ads) they push our emotional buttons, to a degree that we allow them to take residence in our heads instead
of ourselves taking up that residence....

Hospice works just fine at st. Peters. It's spirit and mission are embraced by all. Sure there are exceptions but works well in that setting.

Hospice is a great service ... a service that one hopes not to require too soon  ..but it is comforting to know that it is around.
