the "double roundabout" is only an option .. NOTHING was decided .. other options are being considered .. the only other "double roundabout" in New York State is in western New York  ...... and NO it would not be a Latham Circle type roundabout ..

and again NOTHING is predetermined .. NOTHING has been decided .. it was only the FIRST of a series of public meetings

I guess you wouldn't count Malta, since that's not a double, right?  It's a triple... and I didn't know there was a "Latham Circle type" and a "non-Latham Circle type."  Care to explain the differences?

when they are referring to a "double roundabout" they are referring to a very specific layout ... Malta happens to have 2 roudabouts NEAR each other .. but they are NOT what these transportation consultants refer to as a "double roundabout"

Latham Circle is bigger than the average roundabout and has 4 travel lanes (Route 9) going directly under .. oall one has to do is take a look at it to see that it is not a typical round about

the fact that you folks are so confused and make all kinds of ridiculous comments emphasizes that you reall should attend the public meetings -- the next one is in July

there will be a fence or wall down the middle joining the two circle centers

perfect for hanging church, handiman, and political signs

Now this one makes sense.....HOWEVER.....anything of that magnitude would consume 1/2 of rotterdam!!!

Somebody needs to bring that to the attention of the TB during the study.  The circle needs enough green space in the middle of the circle for no less than 50 political lawn signs.  I'm not sure if that is town code, but it should be.

I grew up on Princetown Rd and I still have PTSD 25 years later from learning how to drive through that intersection. I no longer live in
NYS so I can't comment on what should be done or how it should be paid for, but I only know something NEEDS to be done. I was visiting with my husband a couple of years ago who had never been to Rotterdam and he nearly crapped his pants trying to navigate through
the 5 Corners. If I hadn't been in the car with him to show him what to do, he would probably still be in the parking lot of CVS trying to
figure his way out 2 years later ! We got stuck on Curry Rd and I told him there must be a car broken down in front of us delaying
traffic.. nope. In Colorado we have many roundabouts that work very effectively. I'm not saying a roundabout is the answer for that
specific area, but at least it seems like people recognize it's a nightmare and are brainstorming some kind of solution.

Perhaps Colorado had elected officials and informed residents that had a vision and a plan for the future. Like said before....all of rotterdam is nothing more than a town with 2 lane STREETS!! And yet they continually approve mfh/condos. Adding to the ever increasing traffic flow that rotterdam obviously can't handle.

Rotterdam never considers the future load on the antiquated infrastructure.

ROTTERDAM
Tricky intersection may get circles

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter

State Department of Transportation officials could have a roundabout solution for the town’s troubled Five Corners intersection.
With its high traffic cues and frequent accidents, the bizarre junction in the heart of Rotterdam has bedeviled planners for decades. But an ongoing study of the five-way intersection suggests the solution might be to remove the traffi c signals and build a pair of roundabouts on paved land now used by two gas stations.
“It is something that’s actually being considered,” said Carol Breen, a spokeswoman for the DOT. “We think it has the possibility to greatly increase safety and traffi c flow through that area.”
The two roundabouts were included as an option in a preliminary report released as part of an ongoing land use and transportation study in the area surrounding Five Corners. The report suggests placing one roundabout between Broadway and Curry Road and another between Duanesburg and Mariaville roads.
A straight section of road would link the town roundabouts and would be connected to Wallace Avenue, according to the plan. Traffi c islands would guide vehicles through the approach to each roundabout, and the existing number of curb cuts would be reduced.
Breen said preliminary plans would require land acquisition. Specifi cally, the project would require large swaths of land from the Getty Petroleum station off Broadway and the Coastal Gas station off Mariaville Road.
“We’re hoping to minimize it as much as possible,” Breen said of the land that would be needed.
Town Planner Peter Comenzo said the dual roundabouts are just one idea being floated for the troubled intersection. But he said it’s clear something needs to be done to the intersection, which has remained a source of ire for years. ...................................>>>>.........................................>>>>.........................................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01301&AppName=1

Talk about exaggeration!!!
My son has a grand total of 10 hours behind the wheel and has negotiated 5 corners multiple times with no issues. I just tell him the  road I want him to take and he does it. It is NO big deal.

5 Corners really isn't a big deal, and there's not much of an issue moving through.  I understand that sometimes the traffic gets backed up, especially on Duanesburg Road, but that, too cycles through.  I agree, 55tbird, it's a matter of understanding how to drive and where you want to go.  I see tractor trailers that come through that have no issue.

I understand they may be trying to get traffic through quicker, but to take property away from businesses may not be the best thing to do.How closely to the gas pumps will they be taking?  Will there be issues with the location of their underground tanks?  If so, will the town have to pay for the moving of them?  How about the signage for both of these businesses that is close to the corner, and therefore, most likely on land that would be taken.

I wonder how much they will have to reduce the assessment on either one and/or both of the gas stations, which are currently both assessed at the same value of $325,000 once the size of their properties are decreased.
