Ran into FIVE folks who frequent the rottredam senior gossip center. After they told us 'all' the 'dirt', naming names etc. ........their assessment is............close the center, put sewers in and sell it for a profit!!! IF it must remain off the tax rolls....then offer it to the charter school or the vets for housing. YUP that's exactly what they said...TRUTH!!
OH....and these long time EE supports are no longer supporters! AND...these long time rems donators no longer will donate to rems!!!
So don't shoot the messenger here....just relaying the message.....k?

DVR you are such a fan of Rotterdam do something for the seniors. After this 75 - 85 yr. old group fades into the sunset--nobody is going to be coming to that center unless you begin to do what is necessary to help seniors age in place. Rotterdam is looking at the next highest area for seniors to reside. .
I happen to agree with you. The town needs year-round programming that meets the needs of residents of ALL ages -- not just youth who play team sports and the seniors who go to the senior center.
That is why the Vision 2020 Town Parks and Recreational Plan calls for developing the community programs to go along with the actual physical parks and multi-general community center. We have really only just begun the community conversation on what is needed and what is wanted -- and the Parks and Recreation Commission will continue that conversation with town residents and develop more specific recommendations in the years ahead.

The vision for a community center should be directed at the jct. People already go there to see the Challenger's play and being that there will be a proposed future park........it should also be home to a community center. The jct is left out of everything that is 'community based'. In fact the community center should be incorporated with this proposed park......no? It's time for rotterdam to extend it's benefits to the jct.

We haven't begun studying all of the possible sites for a community center -- my preference would be to build it on lands that the town already owns .. of course if anyone owns a nice piece of land and wants to donate it .. give me a call.
When it was announced that Woestina School would be closed -- the BOA Study Group discussed what potential uses that building could be used for .. and the suggestion that it be used as a community center did come up. However, the building is owned by the Schalmont School District and they apparently have other plans for the building. My personal preference --- well .. I would have preferred that it be kept open as a school .. but since it can not continue as a school .. my next preference would be that it be sold for use as commercial/office space and be put on the tax rolls.
I think the Woestina School building it is too far from the center of town to be a good site for a multi-generational community center. The state canal corp lands are in a flood plain and that limits what can be built there .. and, again, it is too far from the center of town.
My personal preference is to use the Curry Road Shopping Plaza for a new municipal center which would include a multi-generational community center --- the town owns the land .. there is 10 to 12 acres of land there.. more than enough to house the town hall, police department, justice court, highway department and the multi-generational community center. There is even room to move ALL of the monuments from in front of town hall to that site .... and plenty of room for parking --- and while we are at it .. set aside space to move the Rotterdam branch of the County Library there ------ have EVERYTHING in one place -- a true Town Center. Then ALL of the other town buildings could be sold and put back on the tax rolls.

Yes but it is a brown field. Also you have no leadership in the Senior Center. Addiung MORE program at the senior center is a waste of time. Rotterdam doesn't even enter into the conversation regarding the needs of seniors. Rotterdam seniors don't even realize they are being sold short. So give them a kitchen. The group who would use it are dead already. Their ranks are dwindling. You have hangers-on like Lois Yunker and Louise Brass planning trips so they can go for free. Who is helping the frail elderly in town? Nobody. Who is helping to plan the way for a livable community. Nobody. Who is representing Rotterdam at community meetings and committees where the conversation has already begun? Nobody. The senior center is in a sad state. At least Diane Marco tried to do the right thing by the seniors.
I know many 'frail' folks from rotterdam that use the Office of the Aging and Catholic Charities for their needs. The rotterdam center is nothing more than a gossip center. Every single thing the gossip center offers, can be obtained anywhere and it won't cost the taxpayers a dime!!!
Either sell it and put it back on the tax rolls or offer it to the Vets for housing or the Charter school.

Now there is a 30 million dollar pipe dream as a monument to government largess and a giant bootlick to the unions!

I don't think this is what boomer was talking about. If I'm reading boomer correctly, and correct me if I'm wrong, she is talking about the frail elderly. The ones who can't drive anymore, needs rides to doctors, needs help with cooking or cleaning, maybe even home bound........etc....
Your assessment is far different than boomers. You are proposing a 'recreational facility' for able bodied folks, young and old to attend. I don't think those are the folks boomer is referring to.

A multi generational community center? A multi modal bike path? Just what the taxpayer needs. Take prime commercial property on Curry Road permanently off the tax rolls while hurting local taxpaying health clubs.
NEWSFLASH -we are in a recession and residents are struggling to pay exploding town/County taxes because of the working together idiots. The town should form a new commission-of business people not DEM lobs to examine areas to cut costs and consolidate services. Everything with the current DEM crew are lame attempts to add fixed costs and increase town payroll.
Ron reminds me of people who, although in debt for triple their net worth, go out and buy a 45 foot speed boat or build a built in pool in their back yard simply because "they can't afford not to..."
It makes perfect sense (to someone incompetent in matters of self-sufficiency.)

Actually n Albany that is exactly the plan--a multi-generational senior Center. All folks support it. However, the problem is Senior Services of Albany that seems to be self-imploding. Lousy leadership there. Too bad because Ann DiSarro of Schenectady built that place and continues to be a force in the world of senior issues.
