LOS ANGELES (AP) -- President Barack Obama said Thursday that the Justice Department will try to "root out" cases of fraud or manipulation in oil markets, even as Attorney General Eric Holder suggested a variety of legal reasons may be behind gasoline's surge to $4 a gallon.
"We are going to make sure that no one is taking advantage of the American people for their own short-term gain," Obama said at a town-hall style meeting at a renewable energy plant in Reno, Nev.
The town hall was sandwiched in between Obama's four fundraising events in California on Thursday - one in San Francisco and three in Los Angeles. The president was holding six fundraisers over the course of his three-day West Coast trip, aimed at high-dollar donors and young people, both of whom will be integral to a campaign that could set fundraising records.
"This is going to just as hard, if not harder, than 2008," he said of his re-election bid during a small fundraiser at Sony Pictures Studios.

He says he’s not even sure how much it would cost to fill up his truck these days because he hasn’t done it for a while. He gets only what he needs and today he underestimated.
As Obama stated in 2008 as a candidate "under my energy policy the price of energy will necessarily sky-rocket".
Obama has no problem with exploding gas prices only that they went up too fast. What energy policy? Last year under the DEMS not one single energy bill passed. Even with Taxin Tonko in the House. It least pretend to open up Alaskan and Gulf resources. Naah, that might offend his wacko environmental supporters.

President Obama created the problem and now wants to investigate evil oil "speculators". He should enlarge the investigation to gold, silver and commodity speculators. Food prices are also exploding due to his "leadership". What goes up must come down-Economics 101. Another attempt to find political cover which will fool no one.

This deficit spending isn't an Obama phenomenon. GWB was also a deficit spender at historic proportion, until Obama one-uped him. That is why the Republican party has no unity. The tea party people will not trust an establishment Republican that talks fiscal conservative rhetoric, then goes on a spending spree. The "spending cuts" the republicans negotiated for in the 2011 budget is laughable. It didn't help the unification of the party. The independents are looking for a fiscally conservative answer to Obama and the Democrats, and the Republicans dropped the ball again.
