Savage’s legacy in Schenectady a mixed bag

For seven years Susan Savage has chaired the Schenectady County Legislature, and it has been an eventful time for her and the rest of us — in ways both good and bad. Today, as she offi cially takes her leave to start a new job in the Cuomo administration, a little assessment is in order.
One of Savage’s first moves as chairwoman turned out to be her most important: bringing in Ray Gillen to run the Metroplex Authority. Interestingly, Savage, before she became chairwoman, was instrumental in trying to weaken Metroplex and make it less independent than it was intended to be. But she later had the good sense to hire Gillen and let him do his thing, supporting and working with him. The result was a lot of economic development projects and jobs, including good-paying ones at GE, which she can rightly take partial credit for.
Savage was smart but she could also be imperious. With a heavy majority in the Legislature, she was used to having her way. She could ignore the Republicans, limit debate, insist on party discipline and further the Democrats’ hold creating plenty of patronage appointments.
She could also be stubborn, as she showed with the sex offender legislation debacle, when she pushed a bad law, brushed aside complaints from those who knew better, and then wouldn’t give in even when the problems became apparent and political support for it evaporated.
She has shown the same kind of single-, closed-mindedness on the matter of Glendale Home, refusing to consider any other option than building a new one, despite the huge taxpayer subsidy required. ..................>>>>.......................>>>>................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00702&AppName=1

Savage's exit could be GOP opening
Departure, along with Stratton exit, could provide political drama

by lauren stanforth Staff writer
Updated 10:49 p.m., Sunday, April 17, 2011

The departure on Sunday of Schenectady County Legislature Chairwoman Democrat Susan Savage, one of the heaviest hitters in the county's leading party, brings with it questions about whether the party will continue its domination there -- particularly after Schenectady Mayor Brian U. Stratton left two weeks ago to head the state Canal Corp.

Stratton's appointment has made November's mayoral race an interesting one, with City Council President Gary McCarthy likely battling it out against former Union College President Roger Hull, who has the Republican endorsement and is running on a third-party line. But that race is likely still the Democrats' to lose, as their voting bloc in the city is formidable and McCarthy already has ascended to acting mayor.

But the loss of Savage, of Niskayuna, creates a substantial hole in the party's county leadership, as the 13-year veteran of the legislature was known to control most everything that governmental body voted on, not to mention guiding Democratic politics in many corners of Schenectady County. Savage, who last year was trounced in her effort to unseat state Sen. Republican Hugh Farley, resigned her legislature post Sunday after becoming assistant deputy commissioner with the state Office of Real Property Tax Services. She previously worked in a lower capacity in that office before resigning to run for Farley's long-held seat. She had been legislature chairwoman since 2004....................>>>>......................>>>>.................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Savage-s-exit-could-be-GOP-opening-1341066.php#ixzz1JrxPfkYZ

Wow, You folks are truly twisted. You really need to seek professional mental health assistance. The level of hate and bitterness here is amazing. I will pray for you. And, I mean this sincerely, I feel sorry for you and for how you feel. It is a sickness that u have, truly. You need to understand what is going on inside your head and seek a remedy for your torment. This goes beyond politics. It is pathological. Believe me when I say this, because I have seen these symptoms before, this is a mental illness. Wow....

Amazingly, I agree with you in part that is. Twisted? NO! Just folks who are sick and tired of being sick and tired and overtaxed. The truth of the matter is......schenectady is being supported 'mainly' by taxes....and mainly shouldered by the residents. What you see downtown is a false sense of economic security. And the residents are footing the bill while their infrastructure is crumbling around them. While crime is escalating. While people are walking away from their over taxed homes.

Yes there are definitely symptoms of a mental illness.........LIBERALISM IS A MENTAL DISORDER!!!

LIBERALISM IS A MENTAL DISORDER!!!

Dr Michael Savage {PHD from that CONS bastion of Berkeley, CA} has written the definitive book on that subject.

The Gazetto editorial states that SS Savage's single great accomplishment was hiring Death Ray! The creator of Gillen's Gulch where his retail mecca was to be. Was this written before or after The Parker Inn went belly up? This was no mixed bag. A horrible partisan who spent her final days purging all non-DEM hacks from County boards. Thank God she fled before her County nursing home disaster was finalized.

The DEMS are so delusional they now think they will win every seat on the County Legislator? The only hope for this County is a return of the two party system. Anyone who supported SS Savage absurd tax and spending schemes must be held accountable. The REPS will pick up seats across the board.

Be careful benny, savage may pass a law that deems you psychotic for speaking ill of the savage, then propose a residency restriction law like the one that sunk Kosier.

Death Ray has done a wonderfully job of bringing in national toy stores, national book stores and other retail Downtown as he repeatedly promised. His retail mecca at the old Robinson's Furniture is really packing them in! They think everyone is falling for the manure that the bird cage wrapper prints.

Staff writer Paul Nelson reported Monday about Cathy Gatta, a Scotia village trustee, who will likely be appointed to take the seat of former county legislature chairwoman Susan Savage.

Savage, who Republican legislator Jim Buhrmaster said Sunday “ruled with an iron fist,” has officially left to take a Cuomo administration job.

It will be interesting to see if the Republicans, who have been beaten into submission in that county for years, will muster some attractive candidates to take more than two seats on the 15-seat legislature. Buhrmaster already says he’s got seven possible GOP candidates for Savage’s seat come November

Cathy Who? will be an easy one to unseat. Jim B is still fuming after being dumped by SS Savage on the County IDA-without any notice. For once make the DEMS run on their failed record. They take care of themselves.

SCHENECTADY -- Cathy Gatta, a member of the Scotia Board of Trustees, has been selected to replace Susan Savage on the Schenectady County Legislature.

Her selection Sunday by the Schenectady County Democratic Committee came three days after Savage announced she was leaving the legislature for a state job.

Gatta, 44, said Monday she is excited about the prospect of the higher profile position representing District 3, which covers Scotia, Glenville and Niskayuna. She must be approved by the Democratic majority.

"The main thing is that I can do more on the legislative level for the village and Glenville," Gatta said Monday, adding that "economic development has been one of my big pushes." She lamented the adverse impact the economic downturn has had on local communities and hoped she could be part of reversing that trend.

Gatta, who was born and raised in Glenville, is a mother of three and serves as the marketing director for the Mazzone Management Group.

She said she plans to run in November for the two years remaining on Savage's term.
