Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert. Congress said, "Someone may steal from it at night." So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job.

Then Congress said, "How does the watchman do his job without instruction?" So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies.

Then Congress said, "How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?" So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people. One to do the studies and one to write the reports.

Then Congress said, "How are these people going to get paid?" So They created two positions: a time keeper and a payroll officer, then hired two people.

Then Congress said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?  So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an
Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal Secretary.

Then Congress said, "We have had this command in operation for one Year and we are $918,000 over budget, we must cutback." So they laid off the night watchman.

NOW  slowly,  let it sink in.

Quietly, we go like sheep to slaughter.

Does anybody remember the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY..... during the Carter Administration?

Anybody?

Anything?

No?

Didn’t think so!

Bottom line. We've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency....the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember!

Ready??
It was very simple...and at the time, everybody thought it very appropriate.

The Department of Energy was instituted on 8/04/1977,

TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

Hey, pretty efficient, huh???

AND NOW IT'S 2010 -- 33 YEARS LATER -- AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS "NECESSARY" DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR. IT HAS 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES; AND LOOK AT THE JOB IT HAS DONE! (THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY, "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?")

33 years ago 30% of our oil consumption was foreign imports.  Today 70% of our oil consumption is foreign imports.

Ah, yes -- good old Federal bureaucracy.

Hello!!  Anybody Home?

Funny most conservatives including myself think the GOP didn't fight hard enough or come even close to what cuts are needed.

Every person on the street who's over 65 and on medicare... that is the Republican target.
Every millionaire... they are NOT the target.

Every single mom with a crummy job,  no health insurance, no benefits... That's the Republican target.
Every oil company... they are NOT the target.

Every kid who's parents will struggle to put food on the table and pay for college at the same time... That's the Republican target.
Every person who's about to inherit 5 million dollars... They are NOT the target.

Get the picture... shrink the middle class until they join the poor,
and grow the wealthy.

I'm over 65 and on SS and Medicare and I want the government to severely cut their spending and reform Medicare and SS so that our children will be able to have them when they retire. What good will it do to let the whole system go bankrupt then we all have nothing. I agree that the tax code must be changed so that a company like GE that made 14 billion last year will pay their fair share in taxes with the rest of us.

Nobody wants people to suffer Box but why is it our job to provide for those who didn't provide for themselves. The left wish to target those who succeeded in life because it's their fault according to them others didn't succeed. How about lower taxes for all classes and let them keep what they earn, if they can't handle there money that shouldn't be my problem. I'm poor myself but I don't want handouts or government assistance, all I want is to keep what I earn to live life the way I want. The only thing I want my government to do is provide sound money which as we see isn't going to well.

Government shouldn't be in the assistance area anyway, whenever they do the cost of whatever they provide skyrockets because companies know they can now raise the prices because they don't have to deal with competition. Allow the markets to work the way they were supposed to and prices will fall do to competition.

Many will take what I wrote as being greedy and selfish but that is not the case. I always donate money or help out programs when I have extra to spare. I just don't want my money being robbed from me through taxes and knowing it isn't being put to the best use is all. Did you ever toss a couple bucks to a bell ringer outside Walmarts, feels good doesn't it knowing you help out someone who needs it more than you right. But now imagine going to Walmarts and that same bell ringer pulls a gun on you and demands you put money into that bowl, that is exactly what our government does to us through taxes.

Henry,
In the USA we all pay taxes for public services.  Roads, Schools, Water and sewer systems...
In most of the developed world, Health care for all citizens is funded in a similar way.  Those who don't use the roads still pay for them.  Those who don't fly in planes, still get protected by govt FAA regulations for safety.

Most of the world sees health care as a right... only in Conservative USA will you find that view to be the opposite.  I don't want to get a tax break of a few dollars if it means that some one else is suffering needlessly with out health care.

When we educate our kids, the entire country prospers.
When we build a strong military, all of America is safe.
When we build good roads, rail and air systems, we all benefit.
When all Americans are healthy, the entire country benefits.

.

Healthcare can not be a right if you have to take from one person to give to another for it to happen. Now you do have the right to succeed and buy healthcare, you do have the right to donate your time and money to others but that's it. I really don't see how you feel entitled to my money that I worked hard for. The problem with the left is that they they keep wanting more and more entitlements and in the end it is not economically possible to sustain it without killing people with taxes. Once you create a dependency on government you kill the very motivation that feeds it, now more than ever you can see this not only in our city but through the whole country. You brought up roads, schools, etc tell me how that's working out right now, better yet go take a drive around Schenectady you have to weave in and out to miss potholes the size of beach balls.

The reps are proposing a 2% cut in the fed budget! Hardly extreme!!! States have cut more than that!!

My neighbor's married son with a baby, is in the military stationed in Afghanistan. If the government shuts down, they will not get paid. They 'all' really don't care as long as the government CUTS SPENDING and LOWERS THE BUDGET 'for the new baby'!!!

There is NO leadership in either party right now! PATHETIC!!

Local troops will receive a paycheck on April 15, government shutdown or not, according to Defense Department guidance released by Marine Corps officials.

However, if the government does shut down, the mid-month paycheck for troops will be for only the eight days of April covered by the latest continuing resolution, officials said. So far, Congress has approved six continuing resolutions to keep the government running prior to the passage of a budget for this year.

If a new CR is passed, the April 15 paycheck will reimburse troops for the entire 15 days, according to the guidance.

In the event of a shutdown, military will work as scheduled and will continue to earn money throughout the shutdown period, but will not receive their pays until appropriations are approved by Congress.

They are in college--living in Georgetown--learning about politics.  I LOVE IT!!!!  He see it all down there.  Good exercise in asserting yourself in the political scene to make a statement.  Hell I was one of the people who was carrying a mop and bucket in Saratoga telling Jimmy Tedesco to clean up his act.  Love this stuff.

College kids are great Boomer but they are also very stupid when it comes to real life situations due to their lack of ever being responsible for anything in their lives and lack of experience. When they get married have a family, pay their bills, and hold a job then lets see if they feel the same way.

OK Henry... We'll do it your way.
I feel my money is well spent if it creates a better America for all it's citizens.  You apparently feel the opposite.  SO go ahead... make it on your own... WITH NONE OF MY MONEY.
Go back and pay for every day of your education.  None of MY money.
Pay for the US Military to guard your sorry butt... why should I pay for any military equipment that protects YOU.
Don't drive on MY roads or MY bridges, or drink from the public water system that I PAID FOR.  GO get your own.
Don't expect me to pay for anything that helps YOU.  Go it on your own.

I will continue to fund public education... you are not invited.
I will continue to fund public roads, bridges, parks, sewer treatment plants, landfills, recycling centers. You go it on your own.
I will continue to fund HEALTH CARE for those who need some help... the poor, the elderly, the mentally ill, the homeless... but you ...
go it on your own.
I feel privileged to live in this country.  I am honored to follow the tradition of making this country the best it can be for ALL it's citizens.
I hope I've made this country a little bet better than it was when I arrived here.  I hope I've helped some American achieve a little more in his life, due to the few dollars that I pay in taxes.
When I leave this place... I can look back with pride that I possibly made it a little bit better... You can look back at a  bag of YOUR money.
