Ex-mayor's car slated first to go Schenectady council makes sale of jeep first order of business by lauren stanforth Staff writer Published 12:00 a.m., Monday, April 4, 2011
SCHENECTADY -- Mayor Brian U. Stratton will have been out of office for less than 24 hours before City Council tackles its first item of business -- selling his ride.
Listed first on Monday night's committee meeting agenda is the sale of a vehicle with the identification number 1J46R48K65C662585 -- the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee that Stratton drove for much of his two terms in office.
City Council President Gary McCarthy, who took on the duties of mayor as of 12:01 a.m. Monday, said the city wants to reduce its vehicle fleet, and the Cherokee comes first. Stratton left his city leadership post Sunday to become head of the state Canal Corp.
Last year, in an effort to curtail personal use of city vehicles, City Council members voted to make most city employees pay back mileage on cars they took home at night. McCarthy, a Democrat who will continue in his day job as an investigator for the Schenectady County district attorney's office, said he will drive his personal vehicle in his new role and will not seek mileage for business close to home.
McCarthy, who will not receive a paycheck for his new duties, is expected to announce in a few weeks that he'll run to replace Stratton permanently, a race in which former Union College President Roger Hull has already declared he'll run on a third-party line......................>>>>..................>>>>.....................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/defa.....24.php#ixzz1IYGkIIg4
Does this mean that the next 'real mayor' will NOT have a tax paid vehicle?

I have to agree with you wholeheartedly. McCarthy probably drives around in a county provided car when he's investigating Perhaps we should watch for a county car parking the "mayor's" parking spot

Gee, glad the taxpayers of Schenectady were watching their money while he was in office. I know that he probably needed this vehicle with all the off-roading he was doing through the city (or maybe that's why the roads weren't so clear, so he could use the 4WD in the winter. Here's the best and worst of mileage on his vehicle of choice.

Gone but hardly forgotten. Where was the press on this outrage? The only folks that mentioned it were the bloggers here. Like a part time Mayor of a fading city needs a taxpayer funded JEEP. The DEMS were grabbing with both hands and nobody said nuthin. The sad part is with the stupidity of the City voters he might have been re-elected.
