Gemini My aunt and uncle had bought the house we lived in on Jerome Ave and they said how it has gotten bad there too : ( When I lived there , there was Bills market on Helderberg Ave. and Fredericks flower shop. Drove down Helderberg the other day and was suprised to see the flower shop was torn down. My aunt's family used to own it.
I used to walk to Euclid school elementary then Van Corlear when it was a junior high school.
That was in the days before everyone got bused around.

Trying to remember - was that "Cass's" Market? I remember walking to that one from school - and the one on the side streets off Helderberg (can't remember the intersection). Those were great stores - old wood creaky floors, candy, some of everything. Hell, that was 33-35 years ago ?? OMG I'm old.
The bakery is on Crane but the son of one of the workers there was almost hit by a bullet. The person with the gun went down Sixth Ave to Crane. It was gang stuff. It's a bad area now.
SCHENECTADY-- City detectives were Friday evening still searching for the gunman who shot a city man in the forearm Thursday night, according to police.
The street violence unfolded just after 8 p.m. Thursday in the Mont Pleasant neighborhood when police responded to a residence on Congress Street between 5th and 6th avenues, police said.
Police followed a trail of blood to a house on 6th Avenue into which several men ran, according to reports from eyewitnesses. .................>>>>...............>>>>...............Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/loca.....19.php#ixzz1Hhst0ghx
Awwww...shucks,,,,These are just kids being kids. No big deal. Nothing to worry about in Schenectady, things are GREAT.
Did you hear? Lion King brought in a TRILLION DOLLARS to Schenectady. The non-profits are doing great, and Schenectady is a vibrant bustling city once again. Thank you Metorplex and Susan Savage and the Democrats for this miracle.
Has the Schenectady County Democrats posted their campaign contributions recently? I'm sure after the Lion King show, they will be making their rounds to the businesses that benefited to get their cut of the action.
Where are the Sheriff patrols doing the traffic stops in the bad neighborhoods now that they have state of the art fully auto assault rifles and such?

I moved there a little over 10 years ago. It was so quiet and there were a lot of older people there. A friend lived in the house and wanted to make sure she got good neighbors so we moved in upstairs. After a couple of years, she moved out and bought a house. It still wasnt too bad. But in the last couple of years, it just seems that the landlords dont care who they rent to. My daughter started school in Van. I remember going out on the playground in the morning and the staff was cleaning up broken bottles and used condoms. They were doing this while the parents were bringing their kids to school.
I remember the market that was near the corner of Westside that closed up. It has reopened recently. I also remember a market right around the corner on Helderberg from Jerome that also closed up. Before I moved there, my friend lived there for about 10 years or so and I was always hanging out there.
Now its just sad to see the old people on the street having to fend for themselves. The old man across the street had his car broken into several times. They kicked the mirrors off cars, slashed tires, and dumped garbage all over the front lawns. After my car was broken into and two tires slashed, Id had enough.

I know many decent folks who grew up and still live in that area. Some want to move, but no one will buy their homes. And as the 'decent' folks die off, it is being over taken by the scum!!
The mt.pleasant area was a wonderful mix of all cultures that had work ethics and pride. It was truly the 'greatest generation' only to be replaced with the drug dealers/prostitutes/welfare recipient scum!!
Someone needs to tell Dennis Packard/Savage etc..... to lower the welfare benefits so the scum will move on to another area that offers more than schenectady does.

Gemini The store on Helderberg near westside was called Little Super, I used to go there all the time when I was 11 or 12 cause they'd sell me cigarettes and beer. Not proud of the drinking but was in a VERY rough time.
The little store near Jerome Ave was Bill's store, he and his wife very sweet people, we used to have an account there, that was in the days when you could charge a little and pay it off the end of the week.
My niece goes to Van Corlear, but my sister wants to move out of the city before she starts Jr. High.

I grew up around the corner from little super - Bennie and Dom were the greatest - got my first cigarettes there too.
We probably knew each other - if you're in your mid-40's.
Mobile, No I'm older than you, but remember the two guys from little super well. Very nice men, well I thought so cause they sold me anything : )
There was also Nicks store on the corner of Helderberg and Guilderland. Used to go there on the way to Euclid School, until an incident happened and never went back. Police called, just will say he would be on an offender list now : ( No wonder I'm so screwed up
Next to Bill's market was Jack Ferraro dance studio. I took ballet lessons there, I hated it, no coordination, but stuck with it for a year cause my Mom wanted me to. : )
I was going to come back and delete what I wrote in my last post and then thought why should I? I did nothing wrong, but I can't understand why after all these years it still bothers me so much. Had a worse incident with a man on Osterlitz Ave will not go into detail but was screaming and his wife was present and did nothing.
I did call him about 5 years ago and told him how much he hurt me, don't think he cared but thought it would help me.
I guess that is why I have always been extremely protective of my kids.
Did tell my parents immediately after the first incident at the store as I was 6 years old and ran home crying, the second incident I was around 12 and things at home were awful and didn't tell anyone but my best friend.
I only hope I raised my kids to know they can tell me anything.
My youngest son was a patient of "Dr Riback" and we had to bring him to the state police back when riback was arrested. They had a social worker and detective talk to my son. so you can imagine the thoughts going throgh my head then.
My wish and hope is that any child who is being abused will talk to someone they trust, as the scars do last a lifetime.
