Upcoming Be Great Mall Walk continues Boys & Girls Club fundraising efforts

The Rotterdam Boys & Girls Club had a list of repairs it was hoping to complete, but time and money weren’t commodities the organization had to spare. To help with some needed touch-ups, the Schenectady-based Home Depot donated $5,000 worth of supplies and rallied nearly 50 volunteers from the store to do work.

The store had applied for the grant from its national headquarters and chose to help the local club.

“It was incredible to see that many employees from Home Depot come in there and basically relit the place and transformed it and made it look 100 times more inviting than before,” said Shane Bardy, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Schenectady. “The bottom line is, most of our funding streams want the money to go toward programs. There aren’t a whole lot of options out there when we are talking about capital improvement, which is why what Home Depot did is so appreciated by our organization.”

On Saturday, March 4, the Home Depot volunteers came in to make the repairs. Volunteers got the project done in one day, said Bardy. Some of the repairs corrected safety concerns, so getting the help was needed for more than just the appearances.

“There was a real possibility of someone getting injured, and they fixed it for us,” said Bardy. “It would have taken years for us to get done what they did in one day.
