Jeweler shuts location
Marv Cermak

Northeastern Fine Jewelry shut down and emptied out its downtown Schenectady location last weekend. A message on the door said the firm was consolidating operations with its shop in the upper Union Street business district.
Northeastern owner Ray Blesser was optimistic when he opened the store in 2008. At the time, he noted that during its heyday, downtown supported a half-dozen jewelry shops. The 400-square-foot State Street boutique was part of the Proctors' complex.
The tiny storefront apparently won't be vacant long. Word has it Sweet Temptations, a specialty bakery on Albany Shaker Road in Loudonville, will be moving in soon.
The shop's main product will be a large line of gourmet cupcakes. Sweet Temptations has been supplying cupcakes to the Apostrophe, Proctors newly upgraded coffee shop.

I'm curious to know how much Northeast was paying Morris for rent in the gallery? Blesser probably isn't on the 'friends and family' plan the Plex has created. The usual self-made businessowners aren't friends of Gillen...they know how to make an honest living without the help of the taxpayers money.

Kudos to Blesser. Always liked his store on Upper Union better!

The only way this 'cup cake' business is moving down there, is with the promise from Morris, to buy X-amount of cupcakes/day from them.....with the taxpayers money of course!!

Looks like the jewelry store would have faired better if the old muddy cup served 'jewelry' for desert!

Cupcakes are a big fad right now.  Someone just sent me two dozen from a place called Krumbs.  Only eat kosher food but my friends have had Georgetown Cupcakes--$16 for six!  The two dozen I received were mini cupcakes and a fortune.  Another fad--like biscotti.  Give me rye bread and russian coffee cake anyday.

Agreed. Another fad. CUPCAKE SHOP?? Shows on TV called "cupcake wars" or some such thing. Anyone remember "Frozen Yogurt" stands opening up left and right? 'Newfangled,' 'hot' and the 'buzz' are other words for "big market segment now, decreasing steadily- make all the money IMMEDIATELY."

Like "muffins" they are PART of the selection of baked goods, they are not the ENTIRE selection of baked goods. Most people in business wish they had the 3000% gross profit margins they bring though! I would rather work on 150% and be around for 80 years.

I agree with Yossi.  This is a fad.  I have been to Georgetwon Cupcake.  People lined up around the corner.  But that's Georgetown.  Hula Hoops anyone?

Not surprising that guys like SB can't. They just don't have enough sense to pour piss from a boot. SB-All hat and no cattle as usual.
