It appears that Ms. Jimino, Rensselaer County Executive, is speaking up at times other than those that make her look better. http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Jimino-calls-for-end-to-state-budget-mandates-1048805.php

Jimino wants state mandate relief
County executive in state of county speech calls for end of shifting costs

TROY — Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen Jimino made an impassioned plea Tuesday night for the state to stop shifting costs to the county and instead cut mandates.
“Currently, we find ourselves on the front lines of a war against big and costly government,” Jimino told the county Legislature in her annual State of the County address.
“This is a war that we as a county have waged for years, while our leaders, namely the state government, whose fiscal decisions through program shifting, unfunded mandates and runaway programs affect each and everyone of us, are safely away from the combat zone,” Jimino continued.
The county executive pointed out that 89 cents of every county property tax dollar is used to pay for state mandated programs.
Jimino assailed the proposed 2 percent property tax cap as symbolic only and does not reduce county burdens without an accompanying reduction in mandated spending.
As far as the bold piece, in Schenectady County, isn't it stressed that we pay 50%-60% of our "state and federal mandates" for these? Rensselaer County spends 11% of their taxes locally and Schenectady pays 40%+? And it's the STATE's and FEDERAL's fault? Get your hand out of my pocket before you complain someone else is reaching into your pocket. By the way, Rensselaer doesn't have a Metroplex, and this article goes on to state that they, somehow, created "346 private sector jobs last year." |
