Repairs to sewer pipe finally finished
Other lines need work; road to stay closed for a while longer

    Schenectady’s biggest sewer break in more than a decade is finally fixed, Commissioner of General Services Carl Olsen said Tuesday.
    But Kelton Avenue may remain closed for months until the city can repave it.
    “There’s not much left of that road,” Olsen said.
    Workers have been on Kelton Avenue since before Thanksgiving, attempting to repair a major sewer pipe buried 25 feet below the street.
    So far, the bill is $850,000. It will likely pass the million-dollar mark before work is done, Olsen said.
    “It’s probably our most complex sewer repair since I’ve been here,” Olsen said. “It certainly was not easy.”
    The city had to hire Carver Construction when the work went beyond what the city had the equipment to handle. In the end, nearly all of the two-block street had to be dug up between Albany Street and Duane Avenue. Workers had to work around gas mains, Verizon lines, a small sewer pipe and a large stormwater pipe just to get to the broken pipe.
    The sewer main was more than 100 years old and made of clay — typical for main pipes in the city, Olsen said.
    Many of them can be preserved for relatively little money by lining them with a plastic-like substance before they get as badly worn as the Kelton Avenue pipe.
    Workers lined that pipe for just $43,000 after they fixed the cracks, Olsen said.
    He said the pipe was too far gone to simply be lined — it had to be repaired first.
    “But there are other pipes,” he said, arguing that if he had more manpower, he could save the city much more money by lining old pipes.
    Not only would it prevent major breaks, but lining can be done without digging up the road, so the city wouldn’t have to pay to repave the street afterward. ..................>>>>.....................>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00901&AppName=1

Over a million dollars ! And will take months to pave? I wonder how the residents there are doing. Were they without water most of this time?

Sounds as though they were without sewers, not water.  I couldn't imagine living for months without sewers / septic.  What were these people doing?

Guys I think it is a sewer main line.

The article talks about smaller sewer lines on the same street.  The neighborhood was mostly likely inconvenience by not being able to park by their houses.

oh,,,,believe it....I know folks that work for the city and want to 'get the job done' but the 'slow down' prevents them and they are bullied to slowdown..
let's hear it for the keeping of the workforce consistent without bumps in the road .... what a JOKE
