With spring around the corner we'll all be subject to the illegally loud motorcycles roaring through Rotterdam and everywhere else for the next 8 to 10 months. Why doesn't the RPD stop them? The town code for muffler noise is very clear and the RPD should be able to ticket loud bikers. I've called many times over the past few years since I moved here and nothing is done. I don't even think the cops know about the law since I've had to read it to them on several occasions.

The police force, who we pay a half a million dollars in overtime a year, doesn't have enough time to enforce all the laws.  They've actually stated that when asked to enforce other things.  This falls into the same category as speeding in school zones and people parking in fire lanes.  Speak up and maybe something will happen, but if I were you, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Cops have better things to do or I should say should have better things to do then busting people for loud exhausts. We have real crimes that are taking place that aren't getting the attention it should because officers are to busy trying to enforce the other 1000's of stupid laws on the books. My car was recently broken into and I had some items stolen, they never attempted to get finger prints or never even followed up on the case. All I got was a police report and I'm sure their copy was just buried in some file cabinet only to grow dust. I hate to say it like this but cops today are useless, they been so watered down by laws they must try to enforce they can't do their original jobs correctly.

I can't wait!!
Seriously though, RPD has pages of things they should be doing before this.

Then everyone agrees here that there is a law on the books for loud motorcycles..........correct?
And everyone agrees that when someone rides their motorcycle that is too loud, they are breaking the law............correct?

So are we to assume that everyone here thinks that cops should not enforce certain laws that are being broken?
Are we to assume that the cops can and should pick and choose which crimes to address?

Then there shouldn't be laws on the books that can not and will not be enforced!!!

Web page with all the phone numbers and if you scroll down all the email addresses of those in position in Schenectady to help  http://schenectadypd.com/contact/index.php can't speak for other communities.

I have complained and had a reply and issues attended to like speeding in school zones  They really cracked down at the begging of school seasons and I noticed by Elmer Ave they still periodically set up speed traps there.  Saw one the other day.  Was that Stealth police car.

Problem is they probably will try to enforce it and in doing so will just leave less room to investigate real crimes. Cops are paid to enforce all laws no matter how stupid or how big of a waste of time it is. So the answer to getting better service from our police is to stop these insane laws from being passed in the first place, we can probably repeal hundreds of stupid little laws right now and the community will be better off for it.

The cops don't have anything better to do than enforce all laws. Nobody's asking them to ignore emergency calls or to drop everything to pull over a loud biker, but I don't see any problem with them patrolling for loud exhausts just like they do for speeders. The cops give the same excuse that they have more important laws to enforce, but this is a quality of life issue and it affects all citizens of Rotterdam. When a problem is not addressed it just gets worse. I've called code enforcement numerous times regarding poorly kept homes that are clearly in violation of code with junked cars and garbage strewn about the house and nothing is ever done. How does Rotterdam expect to attract families and businesses when even the most basic quality of life issues are ignored?

Some of the bikes have absurdly loud pipes, I agree. Sometimes they are built and tuned in such a way as to create the kind of rumble that shakes your house walls at that frequency. The same is true for some car stereo systems. I don't mind it too much, but it can be nerve wracking when it is to the extreme.

The hard part of dealing with this is that not all communities have such laws.  The only way that it will be stopped would be to contact the manufacturer of the bike.  A lot of motorcycles are made this way.  The ones that are modified should be stopped.  And the ones that are neglected in repairs.  But I really dont see too many bikers going out of their way to avoid a certain city or town.  Especially when the bike was purchased that way.

I personally have no problem with most bikers.  There are a lot of bikers out there that have done good things for their communities.  And not all bikers are dirty jobless scum.  There are several Harley rider clubs around here that do fundraisers for kids and charities.

The ones I really dont tolerate are the younger group of people that gather with the crotch rockets and do wheelies up and down the road and race.  That drives me nuts.  And then they wonder why they hit that pothole and went flying.  Hmmm....

I'd rather hear a few loud motorcycles than the gunshots we hear so often here on the hill.

I agree though that some are too loud, along with the stereo systems with the bass that just shudders through your body.

Agree with Gemini, most bikers are wonderful people, in fact they "escort" many of our fallen soldiers funerals to protect them from protesters like Westboro church.

Not saying police shouldn't enforce the law, just seems they choose when and who.

These are an important part of the organ donor community so watch what you say about them.

This is not a problem of "either this or that". You'd rather hear a biker than gun shots? Why is that the choice? We shouldn't have to hear either. And yes, loud trucks and cars are just as much a problem, which is why the law should be enforced in all cases, whether it's a motorcycle, truck, car, or a bicycle with really loud playing cards in the spokes. It doesn't matter where the noise is coming from.

Also, I'm tired of hearing about bikers doing good for the community. Yes, a few groups do nice things, but so do a lot of other people who don't expect that their good deeds give them the right to be noise-polluting thugs on the weekend. There are also plenty of other people who aren't "dirty jobless scum" who don't feel the need to destroy their neighbors' peace and quiet by showing off that they have $20K to blow on a Harley and straight pipes.

And to beat any other biker apologists to the punch, loud pipes are not a safety issue as many of the loud biker thugs would like you to believe. I find it amusing that when I ask what other safety features the biker has added to his ride he can't name any others. Apparently the loud pipes are the only safety enhancement he needs. These guys are often the same ones that, while they are supposedly concerned about safety, ride in t-shirts and black salad bowls strapped to their heads. It's also ironic that the people riding bikes that DO have many safety enhancements (bright clothes and helmet, additional lights/reflectors, etc.) DON'T ride loud (these bikers tend to ride BMWs and Hondas; why are the loud bikes almost always HDs?)

Stop the biker noise, stop the truck noise, stop the car noise and gun shots and whatever other illegal noise there is and make Rotterdam an actual "nice place to live".

The town/state has a fireworks ordinance too - how often is that enforced?

Call the PD when there's MAJOR fireworks going off for a majority of the curry/altamont/heldeberg area to see, and they'll tell you they need to SEE the person lighting it in order to charge them.

Too many "laws" on the books - not enough cops/money/time to enforce them - yet our "leaders" keep making more and more unenforceable laws.

@MobileTerminal -- yes, that's a problem too. My idiot neighbors were lighting them off last year and scaring my cats. The next day I found spent fireworks all over my yard and rooftop. I have a new baby and if the fireworks wake her up this year there's going to be hell to pay.

Regarding non-enforcment, I followed a loud biker into my neighborhood last summer until he drove into his garage. I called the police with the address and they said they could do nothing about it unless they saw him driving down the street, even though the dispatcher admitted that they knew about this guy from other complaints. The cops have every excuse in the world not to ticket these thugs.
