Stories from your Street: Teaching age is only a number

Reported by: Torie Wells

Freddie Anderson teaches dozens of skiers a week. Her ski school does thousands of lessons a year. Multiply that by decades and just imagine the number of lives she's touched. It really adds up, especially now that she's about to turn 90 years young.

Freddie's love of the snow came from her parents, it's a passion she's passed onto her daughters.

"It's really a family tradition," said Christina Anderson, Freddie's daughter who is the co-director of the school.

Freddie started the company in 1950.

"I had a physical education teacher who was one of the first women who were certified as a ski teacher in the U.S. and I said I want to do that," she said.

Ask anyone who takes lessons at the ski school and they will say Freddie is the best.

"She's very patient," said Blythe Thompson-Hurlburt, one of her students.

"She beats me down the hill and I have to work hard to keep up," said Justin Hurlburt, another student.

Debbie Volks is a fellow instructor. She was 8-years-old when she met Freddie.

"I had fallen," said Volks. "She came over and she picked me up."

Ever since Volks has been learning from Freddie on and off the slopes.

"You look at Freddie and see everything you can be and want to be," said Volks.

"My goal for 90 is to get out of bed that morning her goal for 90 is to teach skiing," said Hurlburt.

What we need is a multi-generational community center so that people of ALL ages can come together and do good things for and with the community.

please explain exactly what 'good things for and with the community' actually mean??

please tell us who this is directed at.....the parents that work 8-5+ hours a day? The kids that are in school all day and in after school sports/programs and homework at night? The seniors that are off on casino trips, or sick or disabled?

Give the projections on the folks that actually have the TIME and what the cost would be?

This is not the 50's any more! And this isn't a 'build it and they will come'.

Since it is only in the "idea stage" there is no way to project what it would cost.  It all depends whether we choose to improve and expand an existing facility or facilities .. or build a completely new one.   Siting would b a factor -- do we build on land already owned by the town or buy new land ??
I am not so worried about finding the money to pay for it -- as I am working on "sources" of funding for the project.   It is very possible that we could develop this multi-generational community center at NO COST to the property tax payers of the town.

at first....developing something is ALOT different than the upkeep.....hence all the folks in homes they never could really afford
