BT and Gadfly--you are such cynics.  Do you know why Bingo is good for seniors?  It helps with concentration and eye/hand coordination in advanced age.  Yes they are a gossipy crowd--but no worse than you.  BT I sure would hate to be your parents/in-laws.  I don't think I have ever spoken to anyone who has less regard for the elderly than you.  Sure would love to be a spot on the wall when your kids stick you in home because they don't want to spend the money on Depends to keep you tidy.

this whole thing is disgusting in may ways

Supervisor has no authority to terminate the position - it is the town boards job

the attendies of the center are being sh!t on from the start  - way back when

the board is actually considering putting someone in the position via a resolution following improper termination  - and this alone will cost us(the taxpayers) at least twice the salary

and again the attendies of the center are sh!t on again

it is a good thing the sewers are going in

Guess you don't know the cost of a nursing home, huh? If it was about the money, then I guess we can all agree that providing Depends is MUCH cheaper than a nursing home....no?

I think we can also agree that the rotterdam senior center is clearly a joke! A big political joke!!! The fact of the matter is.....most of those old folks are just cliquey gossipy people who's life revolves around the gossip surrounding the center. We know quite a few that attend the 'social club'....and if the rotterdam taxpayers knew....they'd be screaming to close it down.

Relax Boomer...no one is disputing the therapeutic value of bingo or any other stimulating activity...which you have to admit for
some includes gossip. I think all BT is saying is that it doesn't have to be at the Senior Center and that conducting those types of
activities don't require an advanced level of expertise.

Lighten up...it was funny how BT presented it!

you dont need a degree to fraternize with elders.....just be people....close it----de-segregate the seniors----assimilate them BACK from whence they
came......

I agree with boomer re a qualified person being the director. Look at the surrounding towns. I don't know what the costs are for nursing homes. It would be nice to keep your loved one home until they need skilled nursing care. And of course if you can afford nursing care in the house then keep them home until the end. Heck why not go back to havingthe wake at home and the get a permit to bury them in bt's yard. In fact why not dispense with the medications just get a pillow. You guys are really heartless bastards.

the point is that as a town EVERYONE should be at a COMMUNITY WIDE CENTER....the elders being segregated makes for bad soup
1.it becomes the poor poor seniors
2.it becomes a badge "look what I did/do"
3.it becomes a podium puck
4.it becomes hidden from generation to generation
5.it gets the government WAY to involved in peoples lives

point being with a Rotterdam Community media/tech Center-----EVERYONE is involved ALL THE TIME no matter how big/small their
part is.....elders like to rub elbows with the youth and reminisce and know they are alive.....right now they have 'scheduled' visits and
are novelty/token programs for the youth and podium pucks for the politicos and those looking for a badge of honor....

INTEGRATION is the only way to go......

so,,,,sorry, I disagree with you.....it's more about THEIR PRIDE/HONOR/ACCEPTANCE from my standpoint....it should be that fluid
and it doesn't take a degree or rocket science....

here's your billboard:

"I'm a senior and I live here to"

Most of what you said has only YOUR spin on it.  Intergenerational programming has always been a good focus.  But why do you think exercise classes are called the "Silver Sneakers?"  Seniors don't want to always be with the young.  Didn't you ever get a babysitter or go out without your own children ie if you have any?  Seniors don't look at it as being segregated.  They havre different needs and wants in their golden years. They don't want to be isolated but don't always want to spend their time with kids either.   Yes kids sure NEED to learn from that generation.  Rotterdam has never cared about its frail seniors that I can see.  Now they want a senior housing district?

They do not go to the market on the weekend to be with the  youth.  They go to the market more often all week because they are only making meals for one or two folks.  The senior issue is just folly for you.  Otherwise apply for the job.

if there is a central community center it doesn't mean they have to be in the same classes as their kids.....but they all ride to the same
location....I KNOW WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE,,,,,I work in a nursing home(20years) and that is why I push for keeping seniors in 'the flow'
of life until you just cant raise your head again....sliding into homeplate at full speed.....

-if they want to be separate---pay for it YOURSELF.....
-as for support and services----INTEGRATION TO THE MAX

2 different animals here.....

PS...it ain't folly for me...IT IS ME

my spin based on the stories I have heard during the 20years of working in a nursing home.....yeah, I cant spin the truth of what I
have heard and seen......even during the dying process....

You have said it yourself.  People in nursing homes that shouldn't be.  Help people age-in-place by helping to provide the services they need to stay home and out of facilities.  This way they remain IN the community and neighborhoods.  I sit on several boards with people from Baptist Retirement, Teresian House, Daughters of Sarah, Barnwell, McCauley, the Eddy, Margery Doyle, Kingsway, and atria.  I am at a facility or senior housing once a month.  If you need skilled care those are the places for you.  But the key word is SKILLED.  Rotterdam is so far behind the ball on trying to get NNORC funding and they had one of the best cases to obtain those funds.  They let it slip by.  Meanwhile Karen Johnson, United Way and CC were quickly on the uptake.  But that's Rotterdam"fiddling while Rome burns."

And BT since you are in favor of the churches looking after their elders, I suggest July 12 you get YOUR faith leader to attend a conference about just that subject.  It will be at the Carondelet Hospitality Center and sponsored by the CDSIF with the Guardian Society.  Westminister Presbyterian does an excellent job in caring for their folks.  Other faith communities could learn alot from them.  Let's see who comes.
