NISKAYUNA
$20M Army facililty proposed
New Reserve Center called major investment in county

BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter

The federal government is proposing to build a $20 million Army Reserve Center on Hillside Avenue, replacing an antiquated training facility at the site, according to U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y.
Schumer said President Barack Obama’s proposed budget contains $20 million to build the center. Congress has to give final approval. A spokesman for Schumer said the Department of Defense hopes to finish design on the facility this year and break ground for it in April.
Ray Gillen, commissioner of Economic Development and Planning for Schenectady County, said the Army contacted county and town officials last summer. “We wanted to make sure they were able to build it on the current site, or it was at risk of being relocated. We had to demonstrate they could build the facility on land behind the current facility,” he said.
The new 60,000-square-foot facility would serve 400 personnel from 12 Army Reserve units, which train at the site. The Army owns the 12.4-acre site but plans to buy three acres for the project from John Tommasone, who owns the adjacent Niskayuna Commerce Park.
The training center would contain administrative and educational spaces, an assembly area, a library, a weapons vault and weapons simulator, a maintenance shop and physical fitness areas. The maintenance shop would provide work bays and maintenance administrative support space.
The facility would incorporate security and anti-terrorism mea- sures, such as being set back from the road. The current facility does not meet required security measures, county offi cials said.
Niskayuna Supervisor Joe Landry said the project will create construction jobs in the short term and he hopes the Army will increase its use of the new facility in the long term. “Once you have a new facility, they may incorporate additional training,” he said. “In addition, we understand that the design and layout of the new facility will enhance the neighborhood and the neighboring business park. This is a very positive development for the Town of Niskayuna.”
Susan E. Savage, chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature, called the proposed facility “a major new investment in Schenectady County. It will be similar to the outstanding success we have experienced with the new Navy Reserve Center in Glenville and will further strengthen the important role that Schenectady County plays in our national defense.” ....................>>>>.......................>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00100&AppName=1

So, since Ray Gillen's name is in this, is the Metroplex funding any amount of this project?  And if the Metroplex is involved, this is supposed to raise the tax base.  What is the value of the property and how much in taxes will that alleviate from the residents of Niskayuna and the rest of Schenectady County?  Or do they get the Metroplex tax break, or since it's federal, they pay nothing anyway?

NOTHING. This still has to be approved by the House-so hold the lead balloons. It's funny seeing the usual DEM morons trying to grab credit for something they had absolutely nothing to do with. Hey Death Ray-when is 440 State going to be sold to a major corporation and put on the City tax rolls as you promised 4 months ago?
