ROTTERDAM
Merchants want sewers as part of road plan

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter

Business owners along Hamburg Street are hoping a long-awaited vision for sewer service can be realized as the Capital District Transportation Committee advances a multi-million dollar road reconstruction along the commercial corridor.
Plans are in the works for a pipe to run from the Stoodly Place intersection, pass under the CSX railroad tracks and connect to Schenectady’s line near the Glengary Road. Members of the Hamburg Street Merchants Association are now launching a petition drive to secure interest from the owners of 95 properties along the proposed district, so that the sewer line can be completed during the $5.7 million road reconstitution project already in the planning stages.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for us,” said Skip Renaud, the merchants association’s executive director. “It could transform Hamburg Street.”
The lack of sewers has often been cited for stymieing commercial development along Hamburg Street, which never drew the large retail businesses that inundated Altamont Avenue. A 2006 study estimated running a sewer connection from the city to Hamburg Street would cost upward of $5.1 million. ........................>>>>.................>>>>.......................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01001&AppName=1

at under $2000 per user installed this is begining to make sense
and does this include the costs to deal with the old septic system
but what are the reocurring costs?
$500/year

Hopefully rotterdam can gain access to tons of $$$$ in grant money for sewers cause some of those folks have new septic systems. The town needs to lower the cost to the residents if they want it to fly.

With the current economic future looking dismal and cost rising....this will be a hard sell.

This NEEDS to be done while the road is dug up.    I don't own a business on that strip, but it is a now or never on a sewer project.    This war zone needs revitalizing and fast.  IMHO

Unless the hookup fee is reduced it will be a big minus for the residents to hookup to the sewer system. The initial cost will be reasonable to place the sewer pipe with the help of grant money but the hookup fee is a deal breaker. If at all possible the sewer line should be run in order to attract business to locate in that area.

I saw an ad put out by the Hamburg St. Merchants Association that was in the Gazette today.  I was wondering what was going on.  I hope that they do decide to go along with them, and I think it's something that will really help to revitalize that part of town.  It's looking like a ghost town over in those parts.

MT Pleasant has sewers. Look how well that worked for them.

The sewers are needed to spur economic redevelopment.   I hope the property owners make the right choice and vote -- YES.

I can't help but think sometimes that these businesses aren't needing sewers, but are needing customers.
