MYFOXNY.COM - Starting February 16, 2011, drivers in New York caught behind the wheel talking without a hands-free device will get 2 points on their driving records as well as a $100 fine.
The DMV has reversed its earlier position that cell phone infractions were exempt from the points violations. The department cited a reassessment of public safety consequences.
Aside from the damage done to driving records, the points will also impact insurance rates, likely forcing them to go up significantly.
The NYPD says nearly 10,000 drivers got ticketed in 2010 for being on their cell phones without a hands-free device.
