If being a resident of the city was a requirement to teach in the Schenectady School District there wouldn't be any teachers who would want to teach here.

I dont believe that....I think there are those who would choose to 'rise up' to the occaision and invest.....that is the foundation... take it or leave it....no special treatment...you are who you are and you do what you do....make yourself and your life is yours for living....it's a rod in one's back....stand tall and build it......like the marines......

Shadow-my daughter who is a teacher lives in Sch'dy but works in another city. Tried for years to get a job in the city, but was overlooked for those who lived out of the city AND out of state !!! This has happened to many very qualified teaching graduates. I don't know the reason they are doing this but its well known.
But like I said before she works in a Charter school, lower pay but great rewards as the kids are testing wonderfully there, much higher than Albany/Sch'dy public schools. : )

If there is a teacher who wishes to work for and lives in the Schenectady district they should be given special treatment for being willing to do it. That person would have a special incite into the problems that the kids attending the school have.

EDITORIALS Residency laws for teachers not worth it
The Schenectady school board would like more of its teachers to call the city their home, in conformance with a policy it established more than a dozen years ago, calling for 40 percent of its new hires to be city residents. The policy was roundly ignored, and the percentage of city residents among Schenectady teachers has now fallen to just 16 percent. While that’s not good news, the district still shouldn’t bother to enforce the misguided policy. To be sure, there are advantages to getting teachers to live where they work. It makes them more likely to know and understand the kids they teach. It gives them added incentive to do their jobs well. It gives them more understanding of the community’s plight with regard to school district finances. And it lends middleclass stability to a housing market that could use all it can get. But there are several drawbacks, and on balance, they outweigh the advantages. Most important is the fact that a residency requirement could discourage some otherwise-qualified applicants from applying. It’s not exactly a seller’s housing market; nor has it been one for some time. If a teacher thinking of applying for a job in Schenectady knew that he or she would have to sell their house someplace else and move to the city, they might not bother. And what right should their employer have to make such an imposition? Moving is not only a pain, it’s expensive. And it can be disruptive to family life, if there are children or even just spouses involved. Then there’s Schenectady itself: It may be a decent place to live, but it’s obviously got problems — some of which revolve around its school system. But even if the city were Nirvana, it would still be a city, and city life isn’t for everyone. .....................>>>>...................>>>>................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r03601&AppName=1
Oh right....if Schenectady had a residency requirement, it could be stuck with less qualified teachers...good point. That might lead to only half our high schoolers graduating and our elementary schools doing half as well as surrounding districts.
Wait, that's already happening.
Bottom line, the City taxpayers money is going everywhere but here. The City won't enforce the residency requirements for their workers and now the schools aren't going to either. The middle class is fleeing the City and no one will take a stand.
The other way to look at it is if the teachers don't live here they really don't care if the kids graduate or not they're just in it for the money and benefits.

It appears pretty ballsy of the schenectady school district to even suggest teachers live in the district they teach in......when many of the 'administrators' DON'T!!!
It's an absurd proposal.
Lets see the superintendent, principles, vice principles, secretaries, councilors, food service, janitors and the rest of the staff live in the city FIRST!!!....k?
