While talking with some veteran cops on the eve of President Obama's visit to Schenectady, we all hoped the trip would come off without incident.
When the highest VIPs come to any town the place gains brief national prestige. Of course, if a serious problem surfaces, fame turns to infamy.
We recalled how several past bizarre happenings resulted in Schenectady receiving unwanted international notoriety. In 1979, the city was dubbed the "Cockroach Capital of the World'' after an estimated one million roaches infested a Hamilton Hill home. The squalor was so severe the house had to be razed. Exterminators had to treat the streets, sewers and trees in a four-block area.
On Christmas Eve in 1973, a Hamilton Hill couple in their 90s, froze to death because Niagara Mohawk cut off their home power for nonpayment. Catherine and Frank Baker died in each other's arms apparently trying to stay warm. The tragedy gained worldwide coverage.
In 1987, the global focus was on Schenectady when Marybeth Tinning was sent to prison. She was convicted of killing an infant daughter and was a suspect in the death of a half-dozen infant siblings.
And in 1996, the arrest of Ted Kaczynski, the "Unabomber,'' included a Schenectady connection. His brother, David Kaczynski of Schenectady, helped the FBI solve the case involving 16 bombs sent to various targets over a seven-year period.
Fortunately, the President got in and out of the area without a problem.

Now all we have to worry about is if DV gets elected to something. Oh the infamy!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

No mention of the fire on McClellan where a missing person, reported to the police, was found by the wrecking crew-3 WEEKS later? Of course that happens in every Northeastern City. How soon they forget.

No, I guess it's better that Schenectady is dealing with a Mayor who can't save money or run a City with any financial competence. Also, a county LEG who gives away taxpayer money (via the metroplex) without any accountability. $50 million down the toilet.

Maybe our current history can include one of the worst school systems in the Northeast, or maybe a City of high crime or a City with a corrupt police force. But I guess the biggest injustice would be that the City residents pay triple the amount of tax dollars for all the blatant corruption and chaos. Yeah, that's one for the text books.
