ROTTERDAM School district faces tough choices Mohonasen forum a chance to discuss cuts BY MICHAEL GOOT Gazette Reporter
Cutting fields trips and extracurricular activities were popular suggestions from the public at Mohonasen Central School District’s first community budget forum. However, those items won’t be enough to close an estimated $5 million budget gap the district faces for the 2011-12 school year. That scenario assumes fl at state aid, which may or may not be the case when Gov. Andrew Cuomo presents his proposed spending plan today in Albany. Mohonasen’s situation could worsen, according to Superintendent Kathleen Spring. The district has kept its spending relatively modest, but such a big gap cannot be closed with small cuts, Spring said. “We’re hearing people talking about eliminating kindergarten all together. We’re hearing people putting things out on the table we’ve never talked about before,” she said. Spring gave a brief presentation to about 60 people — about threequarters staff members — from a lectern that was missing a wheel and being propped up by books, possibly symbolic of the budget woes, she said. Maintaining the existing programs and services would cost about $2.5 million more and bring the budget up to $45.3 million. But with the federal stimulus money going away and other aid reductions, total revenues are about $40.2 million, so it is about a $5.1 million gap. Although the district eliminated 17 full-time equivalent positions last year, the actual pain was not quite as severe. “Most of those people are back working in the district as long-term subs right now,” Spring said. The district must look at all socalled non-mandated expenses, including after-school transportation, extracurricular activities, summer school and certain programs. It must also re-examine class sizes. .....................>>>>........................>>>>.........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00900&AppName=1
Consolidation of the 6 school districts in Schenectady County into a single school district would save at least $ 5 M in administrative costs.

nah - they would just shuffle the deck with all the same people
boces should have been able to cut costs and it just created another layer of cost
You have to eliminate the layers --- and eliminate the duplicate positions --- Schenectady County does not need 6 school superintendents each making over $100,000 a year.

Well, there may be certain upper management that may be cut, or certain bureaucratic methods that may be done away with, but think of the bus maintenance costs and gasoline for the busses alone for students all over the county to go to one high school, not mattering where in the county you put it. The addition of the costs of bussing would immediately cancel out the administrative cost discount.
Also, that $5M is only what Mohonasen heeds to save this year. What about all the other school districts? And then what about the reduction in the state aid? What will cover that amount? You need to reduce the mandates and some people need to give up projected raises, you know, like they do in the real world.

Who said that we would only have one high school for the whole county ???? Consolidating the school districts would NOT mean only one high school.
What it would mean is this -- first step -- consolidating the district administration -- you don't need 6 superintendents, 6 business managers, 6 separate district office staffs , 6 transportation managers, 6 managers of buildings and grounds ..... etc.
It would also mean that existing building could be used more efficiently rather than building new buildings.
My guess is that one of the western middle school -high school campuses could become the high school campus and another the middle school campus. But that would certainly be subject to a study -- looking at future enrollment projections and such.

hahahahahahahahahaha.....now you are delusional.....they just add more administration.....are you blind?.....you still need smaller classes the list is endless....there will be no schools as we see them now and no consolidation.....teacher co-ops and kids with IPADs/laptops kindles.....as for extracurricular activities it should be pay as you go and if unable, find a business sponsor.....very simple and the charter schools are the beginning of this.....
no more learning in the box......

That is an old story --- and that is another change necessary to save money --- but consolidation is anothersolution ... notice that the Governor's budget proposal will cut school aid but will increase incentives to those school districts that merge ????????????????????????????
So the only people who are delusional are the ones denying the actual facts --- the Governor wants consolidation to reduce the number of municipalities and school districts in the state. Exactly what I have been saying all along.

Consolidating the entire County into one would initially cost millions to the taxpayers. Who's in charge, how to organize a budget for each school...actually it would be a fiscal nightmare of epic proportions. How much do you thing the Schenectady school district operation cost are? Over $150 million dollars. If the Schenectady schools are failing, to condense them into one district is simply going to mask their problems, not fix them.
Putting all the eggs in one basket in a County which is fiscally incompetent is not a good idea.
