And Jack was not influenced by the Mocha Grande and gelato that I sent him.
You know I think I only had gelato there once. Really good if I recall.
But the more I think about what is going on in downtown - the unfairness of it all... While I'm not going to boycott Appertivo and Villa Italia, I will be thinking twice about giving them my business in the future.... (E.g, if they can't pay taxes, I'm going to be spending less there...)
Homestyle Pizzeria on Upper Union has excellent Gelato. I also imagine they pay their taxes.
Reading these boards about Metroplex has been a real eyeopener for me, the ABSOLUTE unfairness of it all. Metroplex is the devil! I will no longer patronize any Metroplex funded business.
But if the business did not exist -- the sales tax would not have been generated.
Everything the empire zone businesses purchase is exempt from sales tax. Did you know that if the new golub office complex has any work done.....there is NO tax applied. So if I worked for Xerox and was called to fix their machine.....NO SALES TAX. If I worked for an elevator company and was called to fix their elevators....NO SALES TAX. Anything 'inside' the building.....NO SALES TAX!
Check out Schenectady's Empire Zone district....it's huge!!!!
There is quite a lot of sales tax NOT being generated in Schenectady. And there is quite a lot of property NOT being generated by these businesses. Generating sales tax does NOT help the property owners. Paying property/school taxes does. That is a no brainer. Economics 101.

There is an apostrophe in Proctors again. The former Muddy Cup Cafe in the theatre box office/lobby area as of last Sunday became the Apostrophe Cafe. Known since its inception as Proctor's Theatre, CEO Philip Morris in 2007 decided to drop the apostrophe because the entertainment complex actually has three venues. Besides the 2,738-seat main stage, there is the 450 capacity GE Theatre and a 99-seat facility in an adjacent building. So Proctor's Theatre became Proctors, sans the apostrophe. About a week ago, Morris announced Proctors was taking over the Muddy Cup operation in an effort to improve and speed-up services for patrons. The cafe, closed for a week for reorganization, reopened Sunday. Instead of Muddy Cup's usual lone staffer, the Apostrophe had four workers on deck to reduce the previously long lines of customers. Because ''The Wizard of Oz'' afternoon performance was sold out, business was brisk. A cafe worker for the last three years told me despite the large crowd she believed service was markedly improved.
You CAN hire 4 workers when you don't have to pay taxes, or make a profit.
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
The Muddy Cup has a 20 year lease agreement with Proctors - they paid $10,000 a month for rent. How much of the taxpayer money was used to buy them out? Didn't the Gazetto get this info yet...bet the TU gets it first.

Since the revenues from sales tax eventually become part of the General Fund --- they DO help property owners because that means that offsets the amount needed to be raised by the property tax. AND THAT IS A NO-BRAINER --- ECONOMICS 101 (I suggest that you need to learn economics 101 from a reliable source and not from a pamphlet you find in a Cracker Jacks box or worse at a "tea party")

Except the County sales tax revenues keep tanking. Who's going to pay the $120,000 the Muddy Cup paid in rent a year? The sheeple can make it up. Take it out the summer camp fund.
This is about more than infrequent lines for burnt coffee. Hilarious how Mercury Morris frames the debate. When's he gonna pay a fair share PILOT? That's not doable since the theatre lost over a million dollars last year. He's rather open a tax exempt lunch counter. Then he can cover all 3 meals.

I don't know the last time you entered a college business course, but under IRS 501(c)(3) non-profits are exempt from collecting sales tax. THAT'S A NO BRAINER! All those $100-$175 tickets for every show...tax exempt.
But, with running the coffee shop, Proctors will have to pay sales tax on coffee, etc (as was the Muddy Cup). So in reality, the taxpayers receive NOTHING by Proctors opening a coffee shop. Another loss is from the Plex who loaned out $300,000 to Proctors interest free. There is also no set date for repayment...if repayment ever happens.

Correction to your misguided statement -- if a non-profit runs a gift shop or a coffee shop .. they still must collect state sales tax.

There is however something so wrong to me about a "non profit coffee shop".
Why not just set up non-profit car dealers, jewelry stores, and drug stores? I mean if it is for the greater good of generating revenue for Proctors... The hell with the other businesses trying to compete!
Ok separately - The Apostrophe Cafe?
Morris seriously has delusions of grandeur if he thinks people gave a damn about "Proctor's" versus "Proctors". That is one ridiculously stupid name.
When I saw his blog post last week about stepping back and allowing Obama to shake hands of some GE workers, that did reflect very positively on him... It gave me pause, and to be honest, it boosted his credibility with me. Now he's still in negative territory with his taxpayer supported empire building... But the GE thing, even though I think he didn't belong there - more GE employees should have been there... Well I'm digressing.
Still - stupid name for that place. Really stupid.

My statement was that Proctors does not pay sales tax on the $100 - $175+ tickets sold for movies/shows, etc. I did say that they will pay sales tax on the coffee, just like the Muddy Cup has. There is nothing wrong about my statement, only that your reading comprehension is lacking.
Again, Proctors does not pay sales tax on tickets, never has and never will. They do not pay school or property taxes, they do not contribute to the City tax base in anyway and they have a $300,000 interest free Metroplex loan repayable ???????
Also read the TU Morris blog. If he truly did opt out of a handshake with the President, he wouldn't be stroking his ego about it. Seemed to me that he was boasting how 'honorable' he was....please.
You CAN hire 4 workers when you don't have to pay taxes, or make a profit.
And it will be a tax write off on the federal tax return too!

And explain HOW it benefits the property taxes when there is no sales tax charged to begin with!!!!!!! DUH. No brainer. If Price Choppoer goes to purchase glass from some glass company in the counhty. Price chopper is exempt from paying sales tax; the glass company doesn't collect sales tax, loss of revenue to the county.
DUH.
Tax handouts to businesses NEVER NEVER NEVER help the property taxpayer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, DV, tell us about Alsdorf and Todd - the tax delinquents who owed big money on the old Foster Building. Tell us how THEY helped the property taxpyaer. They were rewarded with a quarter of a million dollars. HAVE THEY PAID BACK THE DELINQUENT TAXES YET?"?????? HUH?????? HUH????????
How about Popolizio, has he paid the delinquent taxes on his burned out building????? Has he paid the taxpayers back for the demolition costs?????????
