Eatery-bakery to open
Marv Cermak

A new banner on the long-vacant Mont Pleasant Diner says, "Coming Soon Maggie's Restaurant and Bakery."
The Mont Pleasant business district was Schenectady's leading commercial strip many years ago, but it failed dramatically in the last decade. Most recently, John Marcella Appliance pulled out, leaving another boarded-up business location.
Rodney Tyman is the new owner of the diner on Crane Street. In his application for a city building permit, Tyman noted that before opening, he will invest $20,000 to renovate the place.
The diner, which closed a half-dozen or so years ago, had several owners in recent times, including Bob Alexson. After Alexson closed the diner, he opened the Union Street Bed and Breakfast. The inn was a highly controversial swinger sex party club, which is no longer in business.

Feel bad for the guy.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

$20,000 to renovate the diner? That's more than all the property values combined on the entire street!

That street stays together because Trustco and Mt. Pleasant Bakery stay there.  After Mr. Kramer was attacxked many years ago, that business folded up.  Combo Fish Fry is very distraught about the neighborhood.  Those are the only viable businesses there.  It seems I heard some shady things go on in the Korner Market on Crane and Bridge.

Its a shame Crane St has become what it is.
My grandparents lived on 3rd Avenue until the early 80's...we lived in the other flat until I was 5.
I remember (mid 60's) using my peddle car to follow my grandfather to the PNA on Crane St. I'd park my car in a regular spot. When the typical "owner occupies one flat and rents the other" scenario stopped, that's when things started to go down hill. In some ways, that section of Mt Pleasant is worse than Hamilton Hill.

Many folks are anxious for the new restaurant and bakery to open.   We want to try the place out and .. of course .. we hope that it succeeds.

I give the guy credit and hope he succeeds.
And as much as I'd like to support him, I WILL NOT drive through that area!

My only concern is....why did he decide to pick Crane Street when Marcella's move pretty much advertised how bad things are there by moving out....at taxpayer's expense no less! When a successful business relocates it's business 1 mile away...what does that say? Either the areas they left was horrific......OR........they liked the tax exemptions and the taxpayer hand out.

You draw your own conclusions. Either way, I think I would have taken a risk in the stock market with my $20K before investing in Crane Street right now.

It is not quite a mile from the old Marcella's to the new Marcella's.

I am glad that people are willing to invest in Mont Pleasant.  It is still a good neighborhood ... yes, it has problems .. but it is still a good neighborhood.

It is a dangerous neighborhood.  People that live there do not come out at night.  The gangs are unbelievable and the police are afraid of them.  That area is marginal at best during the day and just plan dangerous at night.

ditto!

Just talk to some of the 'nice' folks who still live there. They have stories that will curl your toes.

I lived 3 houses up from St adaberts for 8 years  . Every other house is a drug den ,its worse than the hill . The Multifamily home across from the church just changes fro one drug dealer to another . Getting a cop to come to that neighborhood is almost impossible .I feel bad for the good neighbors I left behind  but that area is bad . This Numbnut that calls himself DVR is full of sh*t,if he cant see whats going on around here he is stupid . The only other thing of is that he is a troll, just here to rile people up . No one can be that stupid can they?
