Who said I have a gun for protection? That's what happens when one ASSumes
I use them for recreation...I'll simplify it further for you...target practice.
Based on the 4th amendment and verified by the courts, you and your liberal friends have no right to tell me NOT to have guns in the house. If fact, my guns are locked up so well, that YOUR knives in the kitchen are more of a danger to children..how about removing those, and use plastic?

Oh, I don't know about those plastic knives -- in the right hands they could be deadly.

Anything can be dangerous - depending on the circumstances and conditions.

Many persons (probably 99% of gun owners)  have firearms in their homes without any incident or injury --
and I certainly have no problem with the right to bear arms.

I agree.   And that age is difficult for even the best behaved kids ... one mistake can lead to a tragedy.

Given that the weapon was unsecured, the accident could have happened even if the parents were home.

It could have...but more unlikely. My kids knew our bedroom was off-limits to them unless we told them specifically to go in. And at least in my house, they wouldn't have had 3 hours to run amok

Do you really think your kids never went into your room when you weren't home?  LOL

When did I say that? I said I would know if my kids spent ANY amount of time in my room when I was HOME.
I was responding to whether this incident would have happened had the parent been home.
You should take a reading comprehension class

Like 55tbird I have a variety of weapons in the house, some for hunting, some for target practice. and some for protection in the event I should ever need one. I was raised with guns and was taught to never point a gun at anything I didn't intend to kill period and when young never to touch a gun without my father being there. Back then kids listened to their parents or suffer the consequences which were severe.

55--your words "My kids knew our bedroom was off-limits to them unless we told them specifically to go in."  Point is--you were lucky your kids never found a gun and target practice?  Why?  And yes this accident could have happened with the parents in the next room.  It still remains that if there was no gun in the house probably this accident wouldn't have happened.  It is tragic.  Not everybody is as luck as Dick Cheney who shouldn't even go hunting with a gun.

Kinda like telling your kids not to run with scissors in their hand....or.....carrying a scissors with the blades down.
How about book matches.....'close cover before striking'.
How about buckle your seat belt.....'click it or ticket'.
How about don't drink and drive.
How about don't leave a candle burning unattended.
How about don't run with your shoes untied.
How about don't drive over the speed limit even though your car is equipped to go 120 mph.
How about don't text while driving.

So if anyone gets hurt by any of the above mentioned....do we ban....
scissors, matches, cars, alcohol, candles, shoe laces and cell phones???

come on....use a little common sense here folks!

BS Cis--This is the father's FAULT.  Period.  However the kid should not be charged.  He's a kid and it was an accident.  This is what comes from guns unsecured yes Shadow.  But 55 for what reaason do you have a gun?  If someone entered your property you would end up like Barney Fife--looking for the gun than looking for the ammo.  What protection is that?  People should not have guns in their homes.  They are more apt to hurt you than an intruder.

This is such a tragedy for both sides I can barely think about it.

The intent of the father to own a handgun was to protect his family.  Should the boy be charged - of course not.  But lets not take this opportunity to make this crusade against gun ownership.  I'm sure with a google search I can find many situations where a gun protected a person and his/her family from a home invasion.

If there were no swimming pools, children wouldn't drown either.  Yet, we have public pools.

Using Boomers theory then if you outlaw guns then only the outlaws will have guns and we have gained nothing but being unprotected in our own homes.

You're an a** trying to prove your point by using selective quotes of mine.
How about this one in a previous post of mine:
"I have two handguns in my home, both with combo trigger-locks and the ammo is in a locked box."

So the point is "THIS WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED IN MY HOME BECAUSE THE GUNS WERE SECURED"
Case closed, end of story. In the words of my 17 year old.. EPIC FAIL
BTW, I'll send you links to the reading comprehension class.
and... about your knives...

Why do you waste your time!
Everyone with half a brain comprehends what you are saying....and your are right on! A little advise....don't waste your time with the ones who don't have a half a brain....k?

Well BT--that pretty much takes you out of all of the threads.

55 those were your words.  Again since YOU seem to have the comprehension problem--I am against guns!
