WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican-leaning states will pick up a half dozen House seats thanks to the 2010 census, which found the nation's population growing more slowly than in past decades but still shifting to the South and West.

The Census Bureau announced Tuesday that the nation's population on April 1 was 308,745,538, up from 281.4 million a decade ago. The growth rate for the past decade was 9.7 percent, a slower pace than the 13.2 percent population increase from 1990 to 2000.

Only one state, Michigan, lost population during the past decade. Nevada, with a 35 percent increase, was the fastest-growing state.

The new numbers are a boon for Republicans, with Texas leading the way among GOP-leaning states that will gain House seats at the Rust Belt's expense. Following each once-a-decade census, the nation must reapportion the House's 435 districts to make them roughly equal in population, with each state getting at least one seat.

...

Ohio and New York will lose two House seats each. Losing one House seat are Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

When you keep supporting no growth economic policies-pretty soon you have no growth. Everyone of the the losing States is a DEM State. REP States keep gaining population, jobs and political influence.

The big loser in this is President Obama since the Electoral College follows Congressional seats. Hopefully Paul Tonko, who made a complete fool out of himself trying to raise income taxes in a recession, will also lose his seat.

Louise Slaughter's district will probably be one of the two to be cut -- in New York.   She is considering
retiring in 2012.

I would suspect that the Democrats in the State Assembly will fight hard to draw Mr. Tonko's district in such
a way as to minimize any potential threat to his reelection.

Retirement should have no effect on redistricting. Since most of the population loss is in Upstate NY-one from the west and one from the east should be eliminated. Tonko and Gibson will probably be left fighting for one chair. The bigger the district the less influence the huge DEM moron vote in the City of Albany. Tonko would never survive against a well funded opponent.

Actually,  retirements do have a BIG impact on redistricting -- if Mrs. Saughter retires ... they can divide up
her district ... without having to put two incumbents against each other.

It is much easier if an incumbent representative volunteers to retire.

In Massachusetts,  Congressman Olver  (1st District -western Mass) was assumed to be retiring in 2012 ..
buthe has come out and said that he has absolutely no intentions of retiring ... and neither does the
representative in the 2nd District -- so now Massachusetts is looking at combining 2 districts in the northeast
part of the state.

So -- we need to start raising a lot of money to make sure that Mr. Tonko gets reelected in 2012.  Never
too soon to start fundraising.

Maybe horrible Paul Tonko will retire? He's done enough damage. The idea that Tonko needs more cash while collecting a huge State pension on top of his Congressional salary is laughable. All the cash in the world will not help him if he has to run against Chris Gibson. He would probably drop out instead of running on his record.

One of the worst congressmen alive. Stays in thanks to the unions, radical left, copservative party, and little old ladies who like his personality.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

The Republicans haven't found a serious candidate to run for Congress in the Albany area -- for what ???
--- over 50 years ?????

Democrats have produced great Congressmen like Sam Stratton and Mike McNulty and Paul Tonko ....
while the Republicans cry in their sippy cups filled with milk.

Don't put the legendary Sam Stratton in the same sentence as horrible Paul Tonko. Unlike Tonko, Sam Stratton reached across the aisle and was not a partisan dolt. It also makes the son's pathetic performance more inexcusable. You also forget Dan Button who was very intelligent and represented all parties.

Both Ms. Slaughter {who was a cheerleader for the FastFerry which wasted millions} and Paul Tonko {of Bridge To Nowhere Infamy} could be removed and no one would notice. 2 useless minority DEM legislators who refuse to stop spending like drunken sailors.

Yep.

And this is precisely the reason why I will leave NY State someday.

I will not save and scrimp to live a comfortable retirement, just to be over-taxed so it can be re-distributed to people who lived beyond their means...

(Ok yes some do need help - a safety net, but seriously how many people do you see driving really nice cards or big trucks, who really can't afford it...)

Tax and spend progressives are making this state (and city) less and less relevant.

And apologists ignore it saying "Healthcare is a basic human right".  Replace "healthcare" with "free internet" or whatever the progressive agenda item of the day is....

As for taxes, Hugh Farley voted over 600 times to raise our taxes .... and the dancing monkey defends
politicians like Farley because he gets a banana or two tossed his way from them.
