SCHENECTADY
Police bracing to handle year with 12 fewer officers

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

With no hope left for more revenue, the Schenectady Police Department is preparing to go an entire year short-staffed.
Twelve vacant offi cer positions were cut from the 2011 budget. When that was first proposed, Chief Mark Chaires said it would never pass. But it did — and the last few possible revenue sources that could have reversed that decision have now come up dry.
Now the department must reorganize to run three offi cers short on every shift.
Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett is planning to move officers between shifts to respond to daily changes in crime statistics.
“We’re in real-time stats now; thanks for the crime analysts,” he said. “We’ll have to keep an eye on things much closer — the time of day, the trends, when we receive the most serious calls.”
If a trend indicates a crime spike during a time that doesn’t have many officers on patrol, offi cers could be moved to handle it, Bennett said.
Currently, officers are assigned to a particular work shift — such as midnight to 8 a.m. — and stay with that patrol until they are permanently moved to a different shift.
The department may also have to tell residents to come to the station to file crime reports if they call in after the crime occurs.
But that would only happen if the department was too busy to send an officer to the resident, Bennett said.
“We would give them an alternative,” he said.
He pledged to continue the department’s most popular new initiative: intermittent walking patrols and the new directed patrol, which helped crack a series of burglaries during a crime wave earlier this year. ..............>>>>....................>>>>...................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01103&AppName=1

DV won't comment on this thread.  If the dems would make the millionaires pay their taxes, maybe the city could afford police and fire.

If the dept heads lived in the city, maybe they'd realize how bad it is.  But DV's buddy Stratton thinks its just fine to let the rich live outside the city and not have to suffer what the people suffer.   And then DV's buddy let's those non-city residents take city cars 24/7.....how necessary is that?

Keep wasting money and the city will be bankrupt

Then WHY to you open your mouth? Besides, you're the kind of person only your Mother could love.

Anyway, getting to the thread at hand.

The positions were vacant and the cops appear to be doing the same job without them. However, if one bureaucratic position were eliminated, we could fill three of the vacancies right off the top.

I am in favor of a county wide police/public safety presense anyway. Oh I know that the precious RPD wouldn't want anything like that but it would save ALL taxpayers in this county big bucks.

I open my mouth because I have the SAME constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech that you have
and , believe me, if everyone has to put up with your self-absorbed rants   ... then everyone should be
heard as well.
You think your STUPID comments about me bother me .. but they don't .. I just consider the source --
someone who I have lost great respect for in the past month.  You have revealed yourself for who you
truly are .. and it ain't good.
