Cop demoted over abuse of sick leave

SCHENECTADY -- A veteran cop was demoted last month from sergeant to patrolman after being caught lifting weights in a gym while he was out on sick leave, according to individuals familiar with the matter.

The disciplinary action is the latest to be taken against Officer Matthew Hoy, who in 2009 was among the city's top earners.

Despite being placed on desk duty after returning from sick leave, Hoy continued to complain he was still in pain and went back on sick leave again before being observed working out, according to several people with knowledge of the case.

Last year, Hoy, whose base salary is $63,225, earned $119,885 with overtime and longevity pay, good enough for No. 13 on the list of the city employees with the biggest paychecks, according to city records.

This is not the first time Hoy, who has been with the department since July 1992, has faced disciplinary action.

DEMOTED???? That's it????? They should have just fired him!!

Desolve ALL of the police depts in schenectady county.
It should be State Police and Sheriff's only!!! IMHO of course!
