Despite Schenectady's efforts, deteriorating building still threatens neighbors
Friday, November 26, 2010
By Kathleen Moore (Contact)
Gazette Reporter

SCHENECTADY — A burned-out building is giving its neighbors grief, but the city’s best efforts aren’t helping.
The former Tony’s Meat Market on Broadway burned a year ago. The roof was badly damaged, and as slate tiles began to slide down to its neighbors’ parking lots, the owner did nothing.
Code enforcers inspected the deteriorating building every month for a year. No repairs were ever made, the city said.
The city is now prosecuting him — but that hasn’t helped the owners of the beauty salon and the attorney’s office next door.
They’re trying to maintain their businesses, and they want the building secured or demolished.
“People coming through are getting pelted with slate,” complained Rachel Rappazzo, whose office is on one side of the building.
Walter Brazell, owner of the beauty parlor building, began calling the city when part of the building’s fire escape pulled loose this month.
For a day, it hung over his parking lot.
“It was extremely windy. The ladies in the beauty shop worked late that day. I can’t tell you how nervous I was, with the cars parked in the beauty shop parking lot,” he wrote in a complaint about the situation. “I was so scared that someone would get hurt.”
The metal ladder of the fire escape eventually fell, but it hit the parking lot in the middle of the night when no one was parked there.
Both owners want action.
“All they’re saying is, ‘We’re going to prosecute.’ Well, whoop-de-doo,” Rappazzo said. “That’s not really helpful. The safety of the citizens should be the focus.”
But Assistant Corporation Counsel Kate McGuirl said the city can’t do anything else.
“The problem is, people do have constitutional rights with regards to their property,” she said..............>>>>.....................>>>>................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2010/nov/26/1126_meat/

DV can tell you

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

The alleged "miracle mile" is a tax free, no job zone. It reminds me of that phony town in Blazing Saddles. Great frontage-with nothing behind it.

Also watch out for falling DEMS politicians. SS Savage and her buddy Mayor SOS were the first to take a dive. Who's next?
