The Golub Corp. in Schenectady, New York, is fighting efforts by a union to organize workers at Price Chopper supermarkets. Neil Golub, president and CEO, sent a letter to about 124,000 employees at 128 stores in the Northeast telling them joining a union is not in their best interest and that signing union authorization cards would forfeit some of their rights. “I also said that the union’s major interests are to take employee wages as dues,” Golub said. “They use that money for their own benefit as well as major political efforts. They give a fortune for political campaigns which don’t necessarily serve the interest of employees.” Golub also noted 51 percent of the company stock is owned by employees. The company is not publicly traded; the controlling shares are held by the Golub family. The organizing campaign is overseen by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, Local 1, based near Utica. OF course, multi millionaire, very large for profit business, doesn't pay property taxs in Schenectady and doesn't want to contend with the possiblity of a reduction of his own inome if having to give raises won by a union
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
I didn't read anywhere in the article where the union was demanding higher wages. I can pretty much assure you, PC wages are in line with if not above retail averages. Looks like the complaints are about work conditions like equality and senority and hours. That's not a very strong argument IMO.
Unions have been trying to unionize price chopper forever!!! They have never succeeded and won't now. Golub runs a very well oiled machine, pays their employees well, gives them great benefits.........and the employees own 51% of the company!!!!
