Storefronts: Friendly’s closes local locations November 19, 2010 at 3:26 pm by Chris Churchill, business writer
Friendly’s, the restaurant chain, has closed its eateries at Crossgates Mall and Rotterdam Square. (The Troy restaurant along Hoosick Road also seems be shuttered, although it’s unclear if that is permanent.)
(Update, 4:12 p.m.: The Troy restaurant will re-open Saturday morning.)
The company confirmed the Crossgates and Rotterdam closings, but wasn’t too willing to talk about why the restaurants have closed. Check out the statement issued today by a Friendly’s spokesperson when asked about the shutdowns:
“Friendly’s enjoys strong brand loyalty in the Capital Region. We are in the midst of making significant, exciting changes in the Albany market and look forward to sharing these developments with our valued guests in the near future.”

Friendly's has been closing poor performing locations for a number of years now. The parent company has been running through some very rough times.
Quite frankly, Friendly's is not as good as it used to be ... and it never measured up to places like Howard Johnson's.
But a long as the Bellevue Cafe and McClain's stay open -- Rotterdam will be doing just fine. |

I was at Macy's yesterday. I overheard someone say that Friendly's was closed. I asked if they knew why. I thought Friendly's would have at least waited until after the holiday season if they were planning to close. Some of Macy's employees said that they couldn't understand why it closed. They said that it was making a profit and that the decision to close came from their home office. Crossgates Friendly's closed also. |

Maybe the owners of Friendly's have been watching the REMS referendum in Rotterdam and came up with the bright idea to close down and then re-open as a not-for-proft and find one of our yahoo politicians to create a taxing district for them. After all, it's a vital service to the Town, Friendly's provides milk shakes and sundaes at a reasonable cost for our children. I VOTE YES FOR TO SAVE OUR FRIENDLY'S!! |

The Friendly's Downtown and in Savageville closed last year. They both sit totally empty. Surprised they both weren't converted to governmental gin mills, with Metrograft sales tax funds. RSM is going down the toilet. First Mickey D's closes then Friendly's. Wonder how much longer Macy's will stay open? |

As stated previously, Friendly's has been closing locations for the past few years. The corporation is going through some kind of financial problems.

Friendly's closings Marv Cermak
I walked right by the Friendly's restaurants at Crossgates and Rotterdam Square malls a couple times last week, but didn't realize they were both closed until some shopkeepers enlightened me.
Loss of the Rotterdam outlet is the third Friendly's casualty in Schenectady County within the last few years. The national chain shut down Friendly's at St. James Square in Niskayuna and closed another restaurant on Nott Terrace in downtown Schenectady.
Both places generally appeared busy, according to my own observations and input from folks I deal with. Nevertheless, they remain empty hulks today.
The former Nott Terrace Friendly's was located just a football field away from Union College and the 2,400 students roaming the campus. The property was purchased by a Long Island firm earlier this year, but so far there have been no signs of redevelopment.
After the latest closings, a statement from Friendly's said the corporation is in the "midst of making significant, exciting changes in the Albany market in the near future." Maybe they'll reinvent the two recently closed mall stores, but my guess is the former Niskayuna and Schenectady stores are not in the plan.
