Only in the public sector would you be compensated for unused sick time.
It truly is sickening.
This country has become a house of cards.
I am so glad I started investing in gold funds earlier this year.
A collapse of our system may not be imminent but I believe it is becoming unavoidable. |

That's not actually true. There are private companies that give compensate you when you leave the company for unused sick time. They usually make it combination sick / vacation time instead. |

I kinda figured that some companies do... Almost all companies pay you for unused vacation time - but I believe most private companies expect people only to use sick time when they are sick, hence not a compensation tool. (E.g, I believe it is pretty rare - while it seems to be common where the public sector is concerned.) |

When you leave a private sector job, they must pay you your unused vacation time since that is EARNED!
The same applies to sick time if it is an EARNED benefit.
If sick time is a 'company benefit' then the company makes that call. |

EDITORIAL Still time to undo Stratton’s pensionpadding damage
Schenectady Mayor Brian Stratton has given so many explanations for why Fire Chief Robert Farstad was able to collect $47,000 in overtime this year that one can only guess at the real reason. But at this point it doesn’t really matter how Farstad did it or why the mayor allowed it, only that it be stopped immediately and some effort made to reverse its impact — which will otherwise be unfairly borne by the state Retirement System. There is a way to achieve this — and to satisfy Stratton’s professed desire (depending on what day it is) to correct the “error” he insists was made when Farstad came back to Schenectady after a one-year stint as chief of the Scotia Fire Department in 1997. But the City Council must act quickly, and it has to deny Farstad additional compensation for the remainder of the year. It could probably do this by laying him off through Dec. 31 or agreeing to defer his compensation for this period until 2011. A layoff would probably be quickest, and more likely to withstand Retirement System scrutiny. Doing so would reduce his pensionable earnings for the year — which he says will be his last full one on the job and thus the one most likely to determine his pension payout — to roughly $116,000. That amount would produce a pension of roughly $74,000 — almost exactly 70 percent of his current $106,000 salary, which would’ve been used to calculate his pension before Stratton’s rogue pensionpadding scheme. By coincidence, 70 percent is also the amount that Stratton argues should be used to calculate Farstad’s pension, and would have been if not for Farstad’s break in service 13 years ago, during which time city fi refighters’ pension plans were improved. Because Farstad wasn’t allowed into the new plan, only 64 percent of his highest year’s income could be used for pension-calculation purposes. But 64 percent of $116,000 is roughly equal to 70 percent of $106,000, so Stratton — and Farstad — should still be satisfi ed if his income for this year tops out at $116,000. This would still constitute some pension padding by the city — if Stratton had left well enough alone, Farstad’s pension would have only been $68,000 — but nothing like what would have occurred if their overtime scheme had gone on for another year. In that case, Farstad’s pension could have reached as much as $112,500! ............................>>>>............................>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00900&AppName=1

I must say, maybe it's only a local thing. Now, state workers do NOT get paid for their unused sick leave. (no I don't work for the state myself). I do know if you have worked for the state for a very long time, that your sick leave might be changed to a credit to perhaps save you $20 a month on the cost of your health insurance. But otherwise, nothing. I know several people in retail and in some other local entities of world wide companies that, while they provide some sick days each year, there's no requirement that sick days be used only when you are sick. My nephew works in a supermarket chain locally that they get 5 sick days per year. THey do get paid in December for all unusued sick days as of the end of November, it's kind of like getting a Christmas bonus. And if you awaken on a beautiful day and you want to enjoy yourself, you just call in sick. Concerned that if you ask for a specific day off that you might not get it? Then call in sick (even though you are not sick) and no one will question it. |

What a joke from the weak as water Gazetto editorial writers. Where is the demand for an immediate resignation by this pathetic Mayor? A load of double talk and mush. The Mayor cooked up an illegal contract for the sole purpose of screwing STATE taxpayers. I want to hear from those that say they don't want to get involved since they left for the suburbs. The Mayor must immediately resign in disgrace. There is no way to make this right. The grubbing for a pay increase for 2 years, the 19 fire fighters layoffs, the $314.000 golf pro, then this illegal contract. Enough. And all the time he knowingly tried to pension pad PLUS increase his travel slush fund. And some want him to lead by example? He has been for the past 7 years. Grab all you can boys and girls because the party is over next November. |

Mayor SOS walked the parade route to boos from the sheeple. Resignations must be imminent. There is no way to spin out of this. TV-13 led their news with interviews and not one person supported Stratton or his idiotic defenses. He was trying to save the City money? ROTFLMAO!! That would be a first. Get your fork ready! |

I'm surprised the media hasn't picked up on the fact that the City has to contribute 18% of any reported pensionable salary to the NYS pension system. By Stratton intentionally reporting false salary information to the pension system, the City had to pay an additional 18.2% on the Chief's salary which was reported as overtime instead of a retirement payout of unused sick/vacation and other benefit accruals. This alone cost the City thousands of dollars over the last two years. All together it costs the city over $20,000. http://www.osc.state.ny.us/ret.....t_salary_summary.pdf |

So, I guess YOU think STratton should be re-elected?????? Does that mean you support raising taxes on the poor to pad the pension of a manager who, by law, may NOT earn overtime? DV, listen, WITHOUT Strattons SECRET and ILLEGAL actions, Farstad would have gotten a penion of a WHOPPING $68,000 per year. That is MORE THAN TWICE what the typical Schenectady household makes. Farstad is ONE income, "household" means the two or three incomes that comprise one household. So, I guess think raising taxes on the financially struggliing families is just and proper to give a FAT LUCRATIVE pension to a political cronie, right. Can you just provide an answer for once? Do you support giving a fat pension to a guy who, without a secret deal, would have received a pension for the rest of his life of MNORE THAN TWICE the income of a complete household in the city. |
