Apparently House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who I once thought represented a single district at the tip of the San Francisco peninsula, is now campaigning to occupy all 435 seats in the House. If she were to win and personally occupy all those seats, she would hold an unprecedented 435-0 majority in the House and presumably be unstoppable She could simply tell all of herselves how to vote, and it would be a done deal. At least that is the impression one receives from TV ads being aired by Republican candidates for the House and by the assorted groups with innocuous-sounding names (with little more than post office drop boxes or Websites) that are now allowed to conceal the identities of their fat-cat, specialinterest contributors. I say let’s draw back the curtain and call the anti-Pelosi advertising what it really is: an attack against women by people who haven’t become used to the idea that women are full participants in our society. For those folks still wistful for those days before women obtained the right to vote, I have some jarring news: Some women, like Speaker Pelosi, now actually have real power and infl uence. But alas, I’m afraid that in the paranoid, sexist firmament of the far right, the term “Nancy Pelosi” has become the new “Hillary,” code name for the bitchy man-eater who’ll whip you into line, fella, if you don’t watch out.
