just citing Marcella's as an example ---- you have to ADD to the property tax .. the amount of sales
tax that this business generates for the county

If Marcella's sells a $1,000 appliance --- that generates $40 in local sales tax --- and I am sure they
sell quite a bit of merchandise each year.

I f Marcella's had mover OUT of Schenectady County -- that sales tax revenue would have moved OUT of
the county, too.

And you actually went to college?  Marcella's sells appliances - the same appliances that Lowes, Home Depot, Sears sells.  The sales tax revenue wouldn't have moved out of Schenectady County, it would have been collected at Lowes, Home Depot, or Sears.  You act like the consumer wouldn't no where to buy a stove if Marcellas wasn't around.  You're hilarious.

I keep posting messages, almost on every thread, asking DV what has improved in Schenectady.  He keeps saying over and over that Schendctady is improving.

I keep asking him what happened, via that list above, and strangely he never answers.  Obviously, he cannot dispute what the facts show.  He is quite speechless in that he cannot provide any input as how Schenectady has improved (outside of the small improvement to a couple blocks of downtown)

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Because the opposite of the "Schenectady Miracle" is the "Schenectady Reality". The truth and honest assessment of our City is a grim one. DVOR is unable to see the reality...maybe because it's just so pathetic. DVOR needs to open his eyes before another taxpayer dollar is wasted on ignorance.

That's a load of crap and you know it! Marcella's is receiving a HUGE tax break which in turn falls upon the rest of the City to upsurp. I say let Marcella's go! Get a business in their that will (1) pay the required taxes for that location (well over $50K) AND (2) bring in sales revenue! That's helping the City. Schenectady is not in the financial position to give away business space.

The FACT is that EVERY purchase made at Marcella's is subject to to both county and state sales tax (unless it is a tax exempt group/organization) that is making the purchase.
That is a FACT ...  you can't change the facts.

The FACT is that Marcella's pays $416 for their property taxes in Schenectady. The FACT is that Marcella's should be paying, at a minimum $35,000 (as Villa Itallia is paying). Villa Itallia PAYS TAXES and PAYS COUNTY and SALES TAX! Open your eyes DVOR, Marcellas gets a $30K gift thanks to the Plex. How do you explain the $4.00 yearly tax Proctors pays into the City? That's not even enough to buy a large coffee at the Muddy Cup?

The Ditch, Marcellas, Pizza King etc..........

I think this machine is keeping the grease........???????

I would much rather have Marcella's IN Schenectady County with a PILOT .... then have them leave
the county altogether.

You are entitled to your opinion --- I am entitled to mine.   So go down to the"Frustrated Hamster" and
argue with yourself until you are blue in the face.

Well, no - not quite a "fact" Ron.

Marcella's sells a LOT of contract appliances to non-profits (abundant in this county) ... A LOT!  Those are 100% tax free.

Exactly!!! And Marcella's could have well afforded to move 'themselves' down on broadway. They clearly did NOT need to rape the taxpayers. But the liberal socialists and the metroplex bought the 'blackmail' bribe and sold them the farm for next to nothing!!! IMHO

Metroplex started with Manning, but has flourished with Gillen

Re the Oct. 9 letter, “Manning, volunteer CEO for Metroplex, doesn’t merit bad rap”: During the inaugural year of the Metroplex Development Authority, John Manning was appointed board chairman by the Schenectady County Legislature. John was a conscientious chairman and went to a great deal of effort to put the board on track.
Mr. Manning approached his role with dignity, a lot of very hard work and some notable accomplishments. His motives and efforts were always honorable and non-partisan. In the early days, he, along with the board, faced the enormous task of trying to figure out how to proceed.
The biggest shortcoming was that none of us had any experience at community economic development. None of us understood that business, including me. That ineptness became clear with a movie theater deal destined for failure which was eventually rejected by the board. It would have been a horrifi c deal for Schenectady and could have destroyed our credibility.
The only way Metroplex could be successful was to bring in a successful, experienced community economic developer. Personally, I knew little about community development and had contacted John Egan, commissioner of the state Offi ce of General Services, who had a strong interest in the position, but that never materialized. As the Legislature considered chairmen at the very beginning, [county Legislator] Bob Farley repeatedly recommended Ray Gillen to county legislators, but that fell on deaf ears until Mrs. [chairwoman of the Legislature] Savage made it her idea and finally acted on it — which was a good thing!
Ray Gillen fit the job like a glove. His whole career was all about community economic development. He knew what levers to push; he had the charisma, a strong financial background; he knew how to manage funds to incentivize prospective buyers; he knew how to negoiate in a non-partisan way; he was a salesman and a leader. He understood how to obtain grants and where to fi nd other sources for money. More importantly, he made everyone feel like a winner and a contributor. With his small, competent staff, they have moved mountains.
Bottom line — the first four years were a struggle, but it did establish a lot of basic groundwork for future endeavors. But without Ray Gillen’s skill, Metroplex would have floundered. Clearly, he has been the driving force behind Schenectady’s success. Like so many other things in life, it took dozens of committed citizens to breathe fresh air into Schenectady’s renaissance. John Manning was one of many who should be proud of their accomplishments.

Golub has benefited greatly under the current Metroplex administration so I wouldn't expect him to criticize his biggest supporter IMHO. Neil forgot to mention that Gillen is being paid a six figure salary to bring in jobs and lower taxes and I've yet to see the taxes go down or any new jobs being created. Success is measured by results and other than the 2 block area around Proctors the rest of the city is turning into a wasteland.
