Hi everyone. I joined because we just had an offer accepted on a house on Sunrise Blvd. I have just recently found out that there are parts of sunrise that have serious flooding issues if there is heavy rain. The house is only 3 or 4 houses up from Curry road. Can anyone tell me if this is an area of concern? Thanks so much.

If it's on the "hill" portion - no, you should be ok, but if it's anywhere near the bottom of the hill, you MIGHT have an issue. Be sure to do your inspections - especially for mold, cracks, etc. |

Thanks for the reply. We are going to have our inspections done and they should be able to tell if there have been any issues right? Is the bottom of the hill where Sunrise meets Curry Road? |

If it's right up by Curry, you should be safe - but the inspections will tell you everything about the house. Sometimes, they're so good, they can tell you MORE about the history of the house than the current owners can (kinda like an anthropologist).
Good luck, welcome to Rotterdam |

Thank you so much! We are very excited! We have been house hunting for what seems like FOREVER! We live in Rotterdam now, but have been renting a house in the Bradt school area. It will be nice to have our own home. We love Rotterdam, the schools and the community. Thanks again for your replies. |

Someone I know is looking to buy a home somewhere else in rotterdam. Same issue....possible flooding.
First check with your insurance company that you will obtain your homeowners policy with. Tell them of your concerns. They sometimes have that information readily available or can direct you to someone or an agency that can. That's what these people did. FEMA sent someone in to inspect the property for them.
Second, check with the town. That area had a flooding issue for years. Perhaps they can tell you if it has been resolved. And get their answer 'in writing'!!

Sunrise Blvd and Memorial Park are built over what was once a huge pond. The drainage on Sunrise has been a problem for years. |

Since it is a "known issue" by the administration you're so "cozy" with, what is their plan for remediation? |

A federal grant was obtained to install a drainage system in that neighborhood a while back...8 or 10 yrs. or so. The problem was alleviated, but it was soon discovered that there were installation errors...I forget the specifics now...but they were things like the water being improperly channeled and, to some extent, the wrong materials were used. Mike Griesemer was closely involved with the ensuing issues...there was some discussion about holding the contractor financially responsible for the corrections...but it soon died, and I don't recall hearing about it again. You should contact Griesemer, and don't let him tell you he doesn't know anything about it. If you pm me, I can direct you to one of the neighbors there who fought with the town over this for years, and eventually ended up working with one of our Town Board members who secured the federal grant for the project. |

Sorry to provide this answer but I honestly live on sunrise. If it is the house I think it is when the road floods that house gets it the worst, white house maroon roof? It is the low point of the road. Good news is that the street didn't flood last year bad news it flooded the three years prior. |

There were concrete holding tanks placed under ground in Memorial Park near the old girls club that act as a temporary holding pond. The problem becomes apparent when there's a heavy prolonged rain and the tanks fill up then the same pipes which drain Sunrise Blvd back up and the flooding starts. Before the drainage pipes were buried from Bway near the gas station all the way to the street off Olean St just before Old Brick there was less flooding. When you try to force too much water into a pipe that's too small stuff happens. |
