A second man has been arrested in connection with the September murder of 18-year-old Terrill Reese Jr. Jamel A. Reed, 23, of Brooklyn was picked up by U.S. Marshals on Friday on a charge of attempted second-degree murder. Reed was allegedly involved in the killing of Reese, who was shot to death at about 3 p.m. on Sept. 18 near the corner of Tremont Avenue and Watt Street. Officers from the U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Fugitive Regional Task Force took Reed into custody, according to Schenectady police spokesman Offi cer Michael Crounse. This is the second arrest in the case in less than a month. Georel Lloyd, 18, of Ontario Street was arraigned Jan. 20 on a seconddegree murder charge for allegedly using a shotgun to kill Reese. Police officials have said previously that Lloyd had been identifi ed initially as a person of interest in the case and was subsequently interviewed. Crounse said he is not sure if authorities have determined the motive in the case. He does not expect any further arrests. Reed was arraigned Friday and remanded to the Schenectady County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. Reese had been described previously as being interested in dirt bikes, basketball and football. He had been a student at Mohonasen High School before dropping out but was close to earning a GED and looking forward to college and leaving the city, according to family and friends. SCHENECTADY—Georel Lloyd stood about 5 feet from Terrill Reese Jr. on Tremont Avenue in September 2010 and fired a single, fatal round from a 12-gauge shotgun into the teenager's chest, killing him over what he described in court on Friday as "problems."
Lloyd said that on Sept. 18 at the Steinmetz Homes, he approached Reese, whom he knew "a little bit," from the side with the loaded weapon, pulled the trigger and ran away.
"Did you intend to kill Mr. Reese?" Visiting Schenectady County Judge Michael Coccoma asked with Reese's mother, father and grandmother seated in the courtroom.
"Yes," Lloyd responded at a pre-trial conference in which he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for a sentence of 20 years to life in prison. The 19-year-old Schenectady man admitted the top count in the indictment and had also faced a misdemeanor gun charge in the fatal shooting of the 18-year-old.
Lloyd, who told the court he was a high school student, did not elaborate on whatever problems he had with his victim.
Assistant District Attorney Peter Willis said the slaying stemmed from a neighborhood turf battle among youths and involved the defendant's brother.
Georel Lloyd's attorney, Michael Horan, said his client may have "taken heat for a family member who may have been more closely involved."
