Schenectady has high taxes .. YES  .. but that is because of how many years of GOP control of the County?
The Democrats have had less than a decade to undo the mess created by DECADES of GOP control.

Totally wrong-as usual. Under the GOP, Schenectady County had the lowest sales tax {4%} and residents of neighboring Counties flooded in to by everything here. This has been reversed under SS Savage and her rubber stamps. We have the highest sales tax {8.25%} and you can't by anything here. Except watery martini's. GB has it right. SS Savage has zero business expertise. Everyone is laughing at her State Senate campaign. Schenectady County-15th highest taxes in the NATION.

How's the City doing under 36 straight years of Democratic "led" City Councils? Worst schools, worst city government, highest taxes, worst services.

Why oh why would any family ever chose to buy a house in Schenectady? You can live in a safe and beautiful community a few minutes away in Scotia or live right over the border in Burnt Hills. Schenectady taxes are the highest and for what? Safe neighborhoods -  No. Decent school system - No. Improving neighborhoods -No.

Guess if you like eating burritos, getting drunk and paying too much for a movie then Schenectady is your kinda place!

Quoted from Kevin March

Well, if you think for all those years that you weren't paying enough taxes, you could always send an additional check to the town clerk (whoever that is this week) and let them know that you don't want to pay less than your fair share.  That would help to lower the taxes of all the others throughout town.  I think I was paying my fair share, now I'm paying taxes on more than my house is worth.  I decided how much my house is worth... on the day that I signed the agreement to buy my house.

first -  tax payments go to the Receiver of Taxes Offices
second - property value is not a constant  .. the value rises and falls with the market    (my grandparents
bought this property in the 1930's ... it would be ridiculous to assess taxes based on the price
that they paid for it 76 years ago)

Improving sales tax revenue-NO. 2 party system-NO. Go for over the border to Saratoga County. They still have solid REP government-that's why property taxes are 1/3 of Savage's Schenectady County. Savage for what?

Saratoga County is quickly becoming like New Jersey along the Turnpike ...bulldozing farms and forests for endless sprawl and tact homes  ..  it may have been a nice play to live 40-50 years ago .. but not now ..
and not in the future.

If I were to move out of Schenectady County ..it would either be down south -- South Carolina or out west
to Arizona or New Mexico or Wyoming.

And why is Saratoga County growing while the working class is fleeing Schenectady County? Taxes are 3X higher! Spend one rush hour by the Rexford bridge and see which way the traffic is going. Hint not towards to "renaissance county".

Wyoming? You're kidding right? That is no place for a displaced Schenectady socialist. South Carolina? Try it one summer-you won't go back. Former ex-linebackers like us do not do well in the extreme heat and humidity.

promise this and promise that all the while playing footsies with the politicos and having to placate the unions.....Atlas Shrugged.....

Saratoga County is the  where all of the young adults are moving to. People from all of the surrounding counties go to saratogafor fine dining and upscale shopping! There are three people that I know that have taken a loss on selling their homes in schenectady county and bought in Saratoga within the last 3 months.

Good for them .. I don't particularly care for Saratoga County.   I'd rather do my dining and shopping in
Schenectady County.

The fact is that County Taxes have been cut in 3 of the past 5 years.   The Perpetual Negativity Choir
says that they are for lower taxes  .. and yet is offended when the Democrats on the County Legislature
cut taxes for 3 out of 5 years.    Something is wrong with you folks.

Uh, would you care to explain how you can make a statement that county taxes have been cut in three of the past five years??????????????????

I just went and looked at my receipts   The county portion of my tax bill has NEVER gone down.

I DO notice that the tax LEVY has gone down, but that has NOT translated to "lower taxes"

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.

It is all smoke and mirrors. The county budget is up 50% in the past 4 years or so, total. they don't spend less at all, and if they find ANY savings they spend 99% of it on something else like patronage jobs for friends, and they throw that in with spending down the fund balance (like what you have in the savings account) to fritter away and they say "we reduced taxes!" they also raises cell phone taxes, mortgage tax filing fees (a nice tax on the American dream) and all kinds of county fees to businesses and residents.

Mark my words, it will not be long we will be looking at a deadly low fund reserve, a raise of a half percent in sales tax, and a 30% property tax increase spread out over 2-3 years. There is no discipline whatsoever, and it remarkably similar to what Constantino did in the 80's and 90's by piggybacking on the growth but also blowing budget sky high with police costs and what not.

Savage and crew choose the word 'fees'. Now doesn't it sound better than 'tax'???? It IS all smoke and mirrors and the dumbed down don't know the difference. And that is what Stratton, Savage and the liberal socialists have banked on. That's why they encourage the uneducated, welfare recipients to the county. When you surround yourself with folks 'below an educated standard', it is a false elevation of self.

But not to worry....taxes, fees and spending will continue to rise and these dimwit liberals will call it 'success'!!

Lower Taxes? (and an unrelated side note)
September 14, 2010 at 10:19 am by Will King

I admit logging onto Timesunion.com this morning and seeing an article that says, “Schenectady County promises a tax trim” is a good thing.

It actually brought a smile to my face.  It really did, I swear!

Then I notice that the cut is 0.3%, which I am happy about because, honestly with the way things are around here with taxes it could be higher taxes, but I could stand for a little big higher of a cut, couldn’t you? Also, a ‘promise’ is no guarantee.

So, according to Schenectady County Legislature Chairwoman Susan Savage, we can expect our fourth such tax reduction in the last six years.

I’m a little skeptical though.  I tend to go along the lines of, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”  At 0.3% I still probably won’t even notice...........>>>>........>>>>..........http://blog.timesunion.com/schenectady
