A senior center is a 'luxury'....not a NEED!!! The bottom line is that the rotterdam taxpayers CAN NOT afford another tax or fee or cost....NOT ANOTHER!!!

The already overburdened taxpayer is already paying for senior care. Be it through Eddy or the Pace program or The office of the Aging....and more!!! Not to mention the lucrative welfare/food stamps/Heap/Epic/Meals on Wheels and yes even federal housing such as Holly Manor and Edison Apts!!!

A senior center was intended for socialization for the seniors IF the municipality could afford it through taxes. Ya know, bingo, exercise, card games...etc....

Anything over and above that, as boomer is suggesting, is already available through people's tax dollars as mentioned above!!

And the boomers are a different breed of seniors. They drive, travel, join gyms and have an already self created social network.

DVR-you need real professionals now to do the work of the future.  We are way past the volunteer stage.

As for hiring professional staff to run a program -- I do believe that is necessary.   That is why we are
going to propose that an Office or Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Programs be
created.    Community Programs encompassing programs for seniors, youth, and everything in
between.

I still believe that some programs could be run by volunteers .. but you do need professional staff
to coordinate.

We have to formulate the specific proposal to send to the  Town Board.  As I said before, once the
general plan is sent either next week or by the November Board meeting at the latest --- I and the
Parks Commission will have more time to start working on each specific area ... like the one
mentioned above.

Boomer, if you are willing to lend a hand ... either send me your contact information by mail to the
Town Hall or call Diane in the Supervisor's Office and give her your contact information.

first we have to get the FIRST half done......sewers and the foundation for businesses......all we are doing right now is the circle jerk of money around the
same town with the same folks.....no growth.....it will age and rust just like Mont Pleasant if we dont do something now........the future is coming....
card parties can be at churches.....it's the churches that are responsible to care for their sheep.......

Senders,  you can volunteer to work with the Public Works Department ... and get the ball rolling on the
sewers  .. .  or volunteer to work with the Town Planner and/or Supervisor to attract businesses.

I am already up to my eyeballs volunteering for the Parks and Recreation Commission  ... because that is what I have time to focus on.
Now -- IF  I were working full-time at Town Hall ... I would have time to do   Public Works, Parks, and
Economic Development ....  but  then you folks don't seem to thrilled to have me around town hall.

I gotta disagree with you on this one.  We need a senior center that is just that, a hub for activities, meals, outreach and more.

I no longer have a permanent residence in Rotterdam, but in the town I'm in, I'm working for this very concept. Our seniors are our heritage.

We (some of us) fight for and end to abortion and an end to the concept of euthanasia. We fight to defend life from conception to natural death. We MUST take care of our elderly as much as we take care of our children.

I firmly believe that the senior center is necessary. I believe, unlike others, that it needs to be not only bi-partisan but totally A-political. It needs to get out of the hands of town govt, completely. No "oversight" - no "management" - no "funding" (from tax dollars). Our (your) residents must be made aware of the center, what CAN happen, what IS happening and step up to the plate to provide. It CAN happen, it MUST happen.

Boomer - I disagree with this also:

Quoted Text
We are way past the volunteer stage.

I don't know if you mean you and ron, personally are past the volunteer stage, or as a center it's past the volunteer stage. Either way, I disagree. Volunteers are the only answers to keep this going. Town Govt isn't looking out for our seniors, and even if they were, it's subject to change with every election, or sooner at the whim of the Town Board. It needs to get away from town control, and put back in control of either a corporate entity, or a 501c(3) corporation to manage it. If you mean personally we're too old to volunteer - which I don't think is what you meant, you're 100% wrong. You know me, I know you. I'm your age. We, someday, will be one of those in need of services of a group of like minded, needful seniors. Who will fight for us, if we don't fight for ourselves and our elders?

There are very few things that would bring me back to live in NY at this point. I've left family behind in NY, I've left friends and I've left a lot of emotions behind. This is ONE subject that I'd come back for - and fight for, it's THAT important.

as for volunteering for public works.....yeah,,,,I dont volunteer to buy a car---I do it when I have to.......they are already in as your
'buddies' are......they should be spearheading the  whole thing if they want to be smart about their choice to run and get elected....

dont make the politicos take care of the seniors.......that's why there is abortion.....it's a choice just as euthanasia will be also.......

it is the RELIGIOUS' responsibility to take care of their seniors......shame shame shame on them for not doing so......non-taxable, commune style
senior care via their friends, family etc......what's wrong with that?????

I am a "big picture guy" ... but I actually do have a life outside of Rotterdam politics --- family things,
church, and graduate studies.
I was also taught by my grandfather to not sell myself cheap ...  I am willing to volunteer TO AN
EXTENT ....   but when the others are getting paid to do a job .. and then they want FREE advice or
FREE labor from me --- well ... what can I say .. I am part Scottish --  and you know  that the Scots
were one of the founders of modern Capitalism.

the FACT IS.....no one has an F'EN clue about elders or what to do with them......and does anyone HONESTLY think government town/state/fed has
any more of a clue......it's societal and generational..........

the government is ILLEQUIPED to do anything good......and fails to see far enough into the future as to it's cost and viability.....

Which is kind of what I said above.

It takes one person, with a vision instead of a political aspiration or hopes of a legacy, to make change.

You are mixing apples and oranges here. volunteering is a great concept and is done EVERYDAY! Could there be more of it....sure...there's always a need!

Ya can't take it out of the governments hands now....it's too late! It's a million dollar business for the government. There are tons of tax paid programs out there for seniors. Call the OFFICE OF THE AGING for a start! Like I posted before...there is the Eddy, PACE, food stamps, heap, meals on wheels, county nurses/aids...etc...and most of these offer transporation and adult day care centers.

A SENIOR CENTER IS JUST A 'WANT' FOR SOCIALIZATION!!! And that is if it can be afforded!

And further more....who else would the government use to victimize to sell their higher tax bullcrap???

That is cool.    I just don't intend to work full-time in Town Hall for free.

Now -- everyone of the folks that I helped get elected last November  (and I was only a very small part
of the whole team)   knows my home number, my email, and my cell phone number.  If they want my
help or advice ...  I am a team player.   If they don't ask for help, I can't force it on them.
