SCHENECTADY New school will be formed Success Academy to take mission from Steinmetz BY MICHAEL GOOT Gazette Reporter
The Schenectady City School District will have a new school this fall — the Success Academy for Middle School Students. The state Board of Regents on Monday formally approved the application to transform what had been Blodgett Elementary School on Bradt Street into the new institution. About 100 students in grades seven and eight who have failed a grade previously will attend. Interim Associate Superintendent Gregory Fields said the program will be the same that the district has run at Steinmetz since 2007 for eighth- and ninth-grade students who have failed core subjects. Students will work with teachers and tutors in the core subjects of math, science, English and social studies. They will also use computer-based programs that will help them learn concepts that they missed and improve their reading comprehension. The current plan calls for three eighth-grade classes and two seventh-grade classes of 20 students each, but Fields said that could change depending on enrollment. Those who have failed multiple subjects and have been held back get the fi rst opportunity to enroll in this school. “We would hope that most parents would want to take advantage of this so the students could not only redo the year but have a chance to recover and advance,” he said. ............>>>>................>>>>..................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00901&AppName=1
