I have been told that some homes in Country Walk Estates have tested positive for high levels of Radon.  This thread is primarily for people living in the western end of Town, Eldorado Acres, Shardon Court, and possibly Sunrise Estates.  Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that is released from the natural decay of uranium in the environment.  The gas has mobility and is able to seep up through cracks and fissures in the soil.  The problem is that it may enter homes as a vapor up through the soils, and expose habitants to radiation.  It is listed as the second highest cause of lung cancer since it is absorbed into the body along with the air we breathe.  The following website is for the New York State Department of Health for further information:  http://search.nyhealth.gov/sea.....mp;output=xml_no_dtd

Generally, the test is performed by the homeowner by obtaining a radon test kit.  One is placed in the basement, and the second one in the first floor living area.  The kits are left for a specified period of time and then they are returned to the Health Department for laboratory assessment of concentrations.  In cases where the test results are high, there are abatement options for vapor intrusion.  A pvc pipe is placed under the slab, and is connected to a small fan that creates a positive suction to remove the vapors from underneathe the home.  I understand it is about a $2,000 dollar fix.  Although this is a real health issue, it is not something to panic over, but probably should be checked because of the longterm health ramifications.  For the negligible cost of the testing, I would say it is well worth it for peace of mind!

Thanks for the heads up AVON!! I do know of other areas that have high radon levels, but I didn't know this area did.

Please don't bring your misguided politics to a thread dealing with public health & safety.  If you are looking to rack up numbers stick to your buddy's thread "EE Drama".

It's an informational thread, not designed for commentary, if one were bright enough to recognize that!  DONG DING!

If this post gets people living in the noted areas to test their home and if any radon is found take corrective action which may prevent a future cancer then it's well worth reading and thanks for the heads up Avon.

Hmmmm the old double standard at play again.  I guess they can all be considered informational threads right AVON.   Yes or no?

Chis, thanks for the additional link!  Hopefully residents do not take this lightly when weighed against the consequences.

A guy I work with said that he knows someone who lives in that area and they did test positive for radon. He said they have to do some 'venting thing'. I don't even know what that means since I don't know what the process is for treating it.

Diane's just upset she didn't hear about it first to make a name for herself when she's "appointed" to fill EE's seat.

It's becoming apparent that DM has a sweet as pie personality when NOT talking politics - but as soon as politics are brought up, she becomes a bitter old maid and her mouth and mind goes straight to the gutter.
