Joann... I wish I could get your fox to visit my yard and make dinner of some of my gray squirrels!

Let me share this situation. We had a family of foxes living in the woods in back of our house. You could see their home from my yard. It was just over the fence. One fox would come near my side door and cry. It frightened us. The kids were afraid to play lacrosse in the backyard. I called the police because we were concerned about them being rabid and they said there was nothing they could do. I called Encon and I was told I "was to do nothing to disturb their habitat or way of life." When I suggested that they were disturbing mine, Encon said the foxes could stay but we could be arrested if we tried to moved them out!
That sounds like rock solid loony liberal environmentalist policy. Remember, it is humans that are the scourge of the earth. We infringe on everything around us. Many wacky liberals would probably say you and your children got what was coming to them if they were bitten by rabid foxes, since foxes were here first. Ask box a rox, I'd bet dollars to donuts he/she believes that.
Well Cis finally somecommon ground. I agree I thought it was nuts too. About 20 years ago we had deer that were jumping the fence and coming into my yard. Tht I thought was kind of magical. At the time I was home with six kids and caring for my father-in-law who was recovering from cancer surgery at my home. The kids thought it exciting to see deer so close to the house. My father-in-law and I made a salt-lick for them and left them food. Little did I know that they were eating everyone's shrubs. Neighbors were furious with me. My next door neighbor took out his gun and shot at them. They never came back. He did shoot at the foxes since they were bedding down more in back of his fence than mine. But they never moved until the following year.

The fox isn't doing his job in our yard. We have many squirrels and many rabbits everywhere all the time. Last month we had a mother rabbit give birth to 3 babies in our front flower box. The babies have now joined the back yard landscape! They aren't eating any of our flowers, (this year) but they sure love the strawberries.
JoAnn At any given moment, I can see up to 6 gray squirrels in my yard... the bird feeder is the attraction. To limit their numbers I trap them in a 'have a heart' trap and export them to a forested area. (Peanut butter is great bait).
I used to bring them about a mile away, but after seeing one with a distinctive marking return in only a few days, I now drive them 4 miles away.

Our bird feeders are the attraction too. And we also use the trap with peanut butter. It does work great! My husband, being the transporter, said the same ones were coming back too. Although I don't know how he knows that. They all look the same to me. So he also takes them farther away. We do the same thing with chipmunks.
One of our 'returnee squirrels' had a Pierced Ear! A perfectly round hole near the bottom of his ear that I assume he received in a fight as a younger squirrel. He showed up 2 days after his export to the woods. To get back to our house, he needed to cross a half mile of thick woods, then a very busy highway with large mowed shoulders on each side. Cross more small woods, and at least 7 city streets with homes, backyard fences, dogs and traffic.
I've also exported a mom woodchuck, and once weaned, 5 of her 6 offspring, & a possum. I no longer set the trap at night, ever since i spotted an almost white skunk in my yard one evening.
There is nothing in the instruction book that came with my 'have a heart' trap that explains releasing a skunk with out getting sprayed, and I'm not looking forward to on the job training in that field.

Six animals so far this summer have tested positive for rabies in Montgomery County, prompting the county's public health office to issue a warning that rabies may be on the rise in the area. Three foxes, a woodchuck, a skunk and a bovine tested positive for the infectious disease.

I read about the animals with rabies too. That did cross our mind when we saw the fox. We know they are around, we just never saw one in our yard and so close to the house.
Just to let you know Box, a friend of ours did trap a skunk. He said he had to throw a blanket over the crate first and then he could transport it. He said they won't spray if they are covered and in the dark. We believe him, but we aren't attempting it!
A dead bunny across the street, reminds me of the time of year when wildlife gets frantic in stocking food up for the winter, and often dash out in front of your cars. Watch out and don't go off the road trying to avoid one! It can be dangerous! One poor skunk turned up dead on my front porch in front of my door! He must of had a heart attack there! Imagine my surprise finding him there at 7:30 in the morn? Every one likes the furry critters but they aren't worth losing your life or limb over so be careful out there when you see one!
