Back to (new) school
Marv Cermak

Eric Ely, former Schenectady school superintendent, just finished up his third week as the new bossman of schools in Southbridge, Mass.

He was essentially chased out of town for consorting with now imprisoned arsonist Steve Raucci as well as for his contempt toward taxpayers and other problems.

A reader directed me to a Southbridge Evening News story stating that staffers at his new district already say the working atmosphere is more flexible and open than it was under his predecessor. That should be refreshing for Ely, who took plenty of heat in Schenectady.

"School districts are like elephants -- they move slowly," Ely said in the Evening News story. "If a school district doesn't want to move, you can't make it move, but a group of people can make it move."

Well, Ely can certainly attest to that. In Schenectady, a group of people put up a slate of school board candidates pledging reform. Then, a group of voters went to the polls with the same goal in mind.

The elephant moved and Ely became Schenectady history.

He can do to Southbridge what he did to Schenectady? He's laughing all the way to the bank.

Apparently MA isn't quiet as dumb as Schenectady - his salary is half of what he made with our
taxpayer money. Garbage will always smell wherever it moves to.

Apparently this new school district is dumber than Schenectady --- given his track record --- he doesn't deserve a dime of taxpayer dollars to work anywhere.

No district is dumber than Schenectady. After the Mad Bomber and too many other scandals they not only refused to fire him, they gave him a going way present. He told the new district he was all set financially.

In fairness to the Schenectady School District, Raucci chose to retire .. which he had the legal right to do .. the school district could not stop him from retiring and could not refuse to pay him his pension once he retired -- even if convicted.   You see .. the school district has to abide by  laws .. civil service and others .. and legal contracts.  It can't just pick and choose which laws to obey and which elements of contracts to abide by.

The Schenectady School District chose to ignore the law when Raucci sexually harassed other
employees by turning a blind eye. Schenectady also chose to give Ely a generous parting gift (not
required by any law) although he calculated a bogus contingency budget and left a ton of sewage in
his wake.

Schenectady finally has a decent chance of getting it right with the new Board and new Super. Let's
stop defending the criminals from the past.

If they didn't give him that payout, they would have had to pay the balance of his contract, which was either one or two more years, I can't remember.

Either way, it was worth it to get rid of him.

Not so true. If Ely left - quit - said I have another job, well then he eats the rest of his contract.
There would have been no payout. It was only for the fact that he "hid" (and I use the term
loosely) the fact that he had another job that the school board decided to settle. The two current
board members Diane Herrman and Andy Chestnut were so outraged that they wanted to rescind
the settlement. Don't see that happening.

Right Herman and Chestnut are the only ones concerned about the taxpayers. He quit-found another position-and there was no reason to give him anything. The City sheeple can't afford handing out bobbie prizes to administrative failures. Anyone who voted to give the bobbie prize is finished.

As far as The Mad Bomber, give us a break DVOR. With the information everyone knew he should have been fired years earlier.
