Student car wash aids Gulf animals

BY CAITLIN TREMBLAY Gazette Reporter

Fourteen-year-old Emily Costa smiled bashfully and ducked out of the way of a classmate with a hose on Sunday at the Tire Warehouse on Upper Union Street. About a dozen students ran around washing cars and squirting each other all in the name of charity.
“It’s not about us,” Costa said as she stared down at her damp tank top and shorts. “It’s about working together to help the animals.”
Costa, an eighth-grader at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, planned and advertised a fundraising car wash to help animals soaked by oil in the Gulf as a result of the BP oil spill. She enlisted the help of her classmates and posted flyers up and down Union Street. From 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, the students worked together washing cars for donations.
Costa said she doesn’t have a set monetary goal in mind, she’s just trying to help.
“It’s not about the money,” Costa said. “It’s about getting together as a class and making a difference.”
One of Emily’s classmates, Rebecca Scorzella, 14, mirrored her enthusiasm.
“I’ve always been an animal lover, so when Emily told me about all the animals in the oil spill I knew I had to help,” she said. “It’s been really fun.”
Costa seemed to catch the dogooder bug when she was 8 years old and adopted a manatee. According to her mother, Jennifer Costa, Emily has always been the kind of kid who would rather give than receive. Jennifer Costa said she couldn’t be prouder of Emily. ..................>>>>....................>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01003&AppName=1
