SCHENECTADY Panel: Sch’dy charter school needed BY MICHAEL GOOT Gazette Reporter
An effort is afoot to start a new charter school in Schenectady. Pam Swanigan of East Greenbush is part of a committee of fi ve people looking to start two separate kindergarten through grade fi ve and grade six through 12 charter schools called Eximius Academy. Eximius means extraordinary in Latin. The board does not have a location for the school at this point. It hopes to open in fall 2012 with 80 kindergartners and 80 fi rst-graders. Among the features of the school will be single gender, multiage classrooms and a longer school day, which will run from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday, according to a brochure by the school. They will also offer an extended year program during the months of July and August. The school, which will be open to at-risk students from Schenectady and nearby districts, is also going to incorporate a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum focusing on “real world” project-based learning. Swanigan said the committee is at the very earliest stages of the process. “We’re reaching out. It’s going to be a grassroots effort. We believe the community should have a tremendous amount of input in what we do,” he said. Organizers say they want to provide an alternative for parents. “Eximius believes that an excellent education is the inherent right of all children, adequate is simply not good enough,” according to the brochure. ..................>>>>..................................>>>>......................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00904&AppName=1
