ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The Defense Department says 24-year-old 1st Lt. Joseph Theinert of the New York Army National Guard was killed by a roadside bomb while on foot patrol in Afghanistan.
Theinert was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry, part 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division when he was killed on June 4.
Theinert, of Sag Harbor, volunteered for a program that allows Guard members to serve three years on active duty prior to returning to a local unit. He was originally assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Syracuse.
