ROTTERDAM -- Fire officials are investigating a blaze that started in a Dumpster and spread to a warehouse, according to town police Lt. Michael Brown.

Just before 2 p.m., fire crews were summoned to the area around 2699 Broadway near the Schenectady city line. There were no reported injuries and Brown said it was too early to determine if the fire is considered suspicious or the extent of the damage to the building.

Traffic was rerouted around the roughly three-block area on Broadway.

I believe this is the old Aldi flooring bldg on the right as you're coming up from the city into Rotterdam.  There was a new business in there, printing/graphics I believe.

Someone at 5 Corners Coastal told me that there was wood by the dumpster in the back of the building that caught on fire. The fire then spread to the building.

I don't know how accurate this information is, but that's what I was told.

Another Schenectady County building goes up in smoke
Posted: May 21, 2010 5:08 PM Updated: May 21, 2010 6:22 PM

ROTTERDAM, N.Y. -- Firefighters responded to the scene of a fire at Aldens Wood Floors on Broadway in Rotterdam early Friday afternoon.

They claim it looks like the fire started in a dumpster behind the building and spread to the spread of the facility. The roof of the flooring store did collapse.

Investegators won't be able to get into the building until tomorrow, but right now they do not believe the blaze is suspicious.

Two firefighters were treated at the scene of the fire for heat exhaustion.

Rotterdam warehouse fire is ruled accidental

ROTTERDAM -- A fire that erupted in a Dumpster and spread to a warehouse has been ruled accidental, according to John Nuzback of the Schenectady County Emergency Management department.
Fire officials determined Friday evening that some of the contents of the Dumpster, notably sawdust, polydust, and 12 nearly empty polyurethane cans caused "spontaneous combustion," he said.

The blaze, which occurred just before 2 p.m., destroyed the 1,800-square foot structure at 2699 Broadway, which housed the Alden Wood Floors company. The company installs wood floors and uses the facility to store equipment.

The Dumpster is near the front entrance of the facility and spread into the eaves and the roof, Nuzback said.

He said the employees of the flooring company were out at job sites when the fire broke out. A firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion.

Rotterdam Lt. Michael Brown said traffic had to be rerouted around the roughly three-block area on Broadway.

It is easy to suffer from heat exhaustion when fighting fires in full turnout gear on hot days.  You have to stay
hydrated.  I hope that the firefighter is ok.
