Relax MC....no one is insulting the catholics! Where did ya get that one from? .

The kid was insulting Catholics by wearting a Rosary.  A Rosary is not a piece of jewelry, it is a blessed item to be used in Marian prayer and not prayer as on a street corner but in private, or together with other faithful (but again, not in a show off manner0.  The kid should not be wearing such a sacred item. If his brother had the Rosary, then the Rosary was to be placed in his deceased brothers hands and then buried with him.

If the kid wanted something of his brother's then he could be wearing his brother's shirt, carrying around a stuffed animal that belonged to his brother, but not insulting Catholics by mis using a sacred blessed religious item such as the Rosary

But then, I guess, just like the the photo of a Crucifix submerged in pee, and the "painting" of the Blessed Mother of Jesus with elephant sh*t on it, either or both of these was either a government funded exibit or displayed in a government funded museum, and now, government support of children (with no religious instrution) to insult Catholics.  Sad the schools can probably teach kids that it is inappropriate to mistreat or insult a girl with a burka, that wearing it (or the veil if only that) is relgious custom that should not be mocked, but it's not acceptable for a school to teach kids that it is inappropriate to take items of the Catholic religion and mistreat them

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

ANY religious holy stuff is that private....if catholic/protestant/jewish or otherwise take offense,,,,then it isn't that personal and close to one's heart....
because really the religion lives inside by faith????....right?????

New sidewalks for the kids walking to school...even a small town in Fort Ann took advantage of a
$612 million grant "Safe Routes to Schools Program". Who's the grant writer for Schenectady?
Probably the same one spending over 10 million for the bussing!

Rachel, you are talking about schenectady here! The government officials run it by the seat of their pants and on a wing and a prayer!!

Sidewalks??? Hell, you can lose a car in a pothole! But they do have bike paths. Perhaps that's where the money went!

So is the Rosery practiced at the instruction of Jesus based on scripture or of men based on Catholic Law?

I really hate discussing religion. But since I was raised catholic, went to catholic school, have friends that are priests and later turned protestant in my adult life, I can compare....

Rosaries are a catholic man made law. Just like the ceremony of confirmation. Just like the ceremony of baptizing a baby. Just like eating meat on friday WAS unacceptable. Just like confession in the 'booth'. Just like lighting candles. Just like elevating Mary to a spiritual god and praying to her while her statue is placed in a 1/2 of a bathtub in people's back yards. Just like the power to choose sainthood. Gambling in the house of God, for profit. I could go on and on............

I respect the people who follow the catholic faith. I'm just not one of them...........anymore!

So for the kid or anyone else to wear rosaries to school......no big whoop for me. And again, the school wasn't banning ROSARIES.....they were banning BEADS! Still a stupid ban, but nontheless, the ban was on beads!!!

AND....it is no one's business if he is a practicing catholic or not! It's all in the eye of the beholder!

$1,500 settles rosary dispute
BY Paul Nelson And Lauren Stanforth Staff Writers
Published: 11:42 a.m., Wednesday, October 27, 2010

SCHENECTADY -- The Board of Education voted in favor of a resolution awarding what their attorney called a "nuisance value settlement" to the family of a middle school student who had sued so he could continue wearing his rosary beads to school. Raymond Hosier Jr., a seventh-grader at Oneida Middle School, had insisted that the white crucifix with purple rosary beads was in remembrance of his deceased older brother and uncle and had nothing to do with gang activity. The district had asked the 13-year-old Hosier to tuck it under his shirt.

He refused, and was suspended for violating the district's code of conduct. At the time, the district argued they were trying to maintain a gang-free environment and that "beads could be an identifier of gangs."

The issue attracted so much attention that it led to a national television appearance on Fox for the Hosiers, and a Christian group filed a federal suit in June alleging the student's First and 14th Amendment rights had been violated.

Later that month, a federal judge signed an order allowing the youth to wear his rosary until September so the two sides could resolve the matter over the summer. In August, district officials said they would revise their policy and allow Hosier to openly wear the religious symbol after John Yagielski took over as interim superintendent. Hosier is now a student in the Mohansen Central School district. His family could not be reached Wednesday for comment. The board approved the settlement by a vote of 6-1.

On Wednesday, the lone dissenting vote came from board member Gary Farkas who said "paying one penny is one penny too much."

"This is absolutely absurd and I'm totally against it," Farkas added.

Board President Cathy Lewis took a different view. "It's a reasonable settlement from the school district's perspective because we don't wish to incur any more legal fees," Lewis said during a conversation before the meeting.......................................>>>>.....................>>>>.......................http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/1-500-settles-rosary-dispute-725689.php
