but if gangs started using that then I would say clamp down on that too.

So if patchouli soaked tie dye Grateful Dead concert tees started to be worn by gangs, you would be in favor of schools banning EVERYBODY from wearing them?  More insanity!

Christian group enters rosary case
Schenectady schools face suit for not letting student wear rosary beads openly

By LAUREN STANFORTH, Staff writer
First published in print: Tuesday, May 25, 2010

SCHENECTADY -- A national Christian group that campaigns for religious freedom and conservative values is legally representing the 13-year-old boy who wants to wear a rosary to school.

A Michigan-based attorney representing the American Center for Law and Justice said he visited Raymond Hosier's house on Monday to prepare a case against the Schenectady City School District for suspending Raymond from Oneida Middle School because he wore the rosary.
The teen was suspended for two days last week after being told by school officials that rosary beads can be linked to gang activity.

Raymond was immediately suspended again Monday when he arrived wearing the purple beads with a white crucifix, which his mother, Chantell Hosier says he wears in honor of his brother, who was killed in a bicycle accident in 2005, and an uncle, who recently died of cancer............>>>>.............>>>>..............Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/AspS.....5/2010#ixzz0owCDYbQL

Carl Strock hit another new low today dropping the s bomb in his column attacking this poor kid. Is it possible to convey your anti-Catholic views without profanities or ripping this kid?

     The last thing the taxpayers in this district needs is another lawsuits or having to farm out the case because it is too complex. Is there one administrator that can mediate this minor problem?

Carl seems to have lost the ability to 'stay on topic'. He has sunk to a new low. The issue here is if it is constitutionally acceptable fora 13 year old kid to be able to wear his rosary beads to school. The issue is not his mother or father or brother or aunt or uncle.

The issue here is about a 'thing' called rosary beads and whether it is right or not to wear them!! It has nothing to do with a parent's past! DISGUSTING!

The gazette has reached an all time low on this one! Do they think this kind of journalism will sell papers? IMHO

The page in the paper where Strock's column is located makes for a wonderful collector for bird dropping for your bird cage. The school objected to the rosary beads because they could be a gang symbol therefore unacceptable, when will administrators start using common sense in these matters.

I heard on the local FOX News report that the kid wears the beads in memory of his brother; they were the ones his dying brother was holding onto while on his death bed.  Our nation is out of control.  Kids are wearing shirts with pot leafs and images of Al Pacino as Scarface, and our schools suspend a kid wearing his dead brothers rosaries.

There are Catholic schools in the area for those who want their children educated in a Catholic tradition... Hebrew schools, Islamic schools, etc.  PUBLIC schools, funded by tax payer dollars should be held to a different standard.

The First Amendment prohibits the establishment of a statel religion or the preference of one religion over another, non-religion over religion, or religion over non-religion.  Showing a preference to one religion might open the door to all religions as a consequence.
For those in favor of allowing a rosary, would you be willing to accept a Muslim dress,  or a Hare Krishna complete with robes, cymbals and gongs?

An solution is a reasonable school dress code which, like some in the area, can have no pictures or words on shirts, and limit adornments (Bling, bracelets, necklaces or beads).

Ok....so this kid wears rosary beads. The school thinks it's gang related. What drew them to that conclusion? Are there scores of other kids wearing rosary beads also? And most importantly.....was is really necessary for CS to bring up the kids family history?

As far as the separation of church and state..........I see many many girls going to school with their muslim head gear on. There are many women who work in government/taxpaid jobs who wear their muslim head gear.

So tell me.....does my son have to take off the cross from around his neck that belonged to his deceased grandfather before he goes to school? Is that a separation of church and state issue or is it possibly gang related?

Uncle Joseph(Stalin) would be proud of ya.  Lets go a step further, and ban religious advertisement and programing broadcast over public airwaves(radio and tv).

So let me get this straight, in your opinion, America needs to take all individual expression away from public school children for the sake of state conformity.  Children can only wear what the state permits and only learn the curriculum force fed to them.

You're a good statist Box a Rox.

CICERO???

Lets Go A Step Further???  A STEP???
Really CICERO?
In your world, going from a dress code which is accepted in area schools...
to
"banning religious advertisement and programing broadcast over public airwaves" (a violation of the US Constitution)...
IS A STEP???
(Why do Right Wingers get so irrational when confronted with a new thought)

The public school that my kids went to has this dress code:
    Students will be required to follow the standardized dress code outlined below
        The Superintendent  shall make the final decisions about the suitability of student clothing.

Shirts/Blouses
    *Solid colors only
    *Must have collars (polo or button down, short sleeves OK)
    *Must be appropriately sized and tucked into pants/skirt
    *Turtlenecks are permitted during winter; must be solid color
    *NO logos other than School logo permitted

Pants
    *Solid white, blue, red, black or tan.
    * Pleated or flat front
    * Must be appropriately sized
    * NO cargo pants
    *NO denim/blue jeans

Shorts
    * Solid white, blue, red, black or tan
    * Knee length and appropriately sized
    * Shorts with belt loops or elastic waist may be worn.
    * NO baggy shorts or athletic shorts
    * NO cargo or denim shorts

Skirts
    * Solid white, blue, red, black or tan
    * No shorter than knee length
    *Slits allowed on ankle length skirts/jumpers only
    * Slits may be no higher than the knee
    * NO denim/blue jeans
    * NO wraps around skirts allowed

Once the kids and parents saw the benefits of the code, there was very little complaints.
  It solves a host of problems, which used to take up teacher and administrator's time, leaving time for EDUCATION.

I attended a Catholic school so I understand what they offer.  There are Catholic (or other religious) schools in our area if that is what you want for your child.  I'm sure a rosary is acceptable there.

For an education with out (anyone's) religion, then NY public schools are available for all kids.

How is banning religious advertisement and programming a violation the Constitution?  There is content that is not permitted on public airwaves.  Let's take for instance - NBC-ABC-CBS cannot show full frontal nudity or other "obscene" content.  It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that religious content be considered "obscene".

I'm sure you could see the benefit of not allowing such divisive content like religious programming proselytizing over the peoples airwaves.

The First Amendment  to the  Constitution  prohibits the making of any law:
"respecting an establishment of religion",
impeding the free exercise of religion,
infringing on the freedom of speech,
infringing on the freedom of the press,
interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.

It would seem that "banning religious advertisement and programing broadcast over public airwaves" would be in opposition to:
impeding the free exercise of religion,
infringing on the freedom of speech,
infringing on the freedom of the press.

Our obscenity laws have often been challenged in the Supreme Court regarding their Constitutionality, but upheld usually in the case of broadcasting.
